PEORIA -- Manuel "CoCo" Venegas, 73, of 418 Stonegate Road, Peoria, formerly of DePue, died at 4:10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004. Born Feb. 11, 1931, in DePue to Jesus and Quadelupe (Villa) Venegas, he married Sunaie Venegas Nov. 2, 1969. She died Oct. 23, 2003. He worked at the New Jersey Zinc Co. in DePue until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1951. He was a Korean War veteran, serving as a radar man second class on the USS Leyte (Mediterranean Sea), USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (South America), USS Gilbert Islands (North Atlantic) and USS Lake Champlain (Atlantic). He was the Atlantic Fleet horseshoe champion in 1953. After leaving the service in 1955, he attended the National School of Meatcutting in Toledo, Ohio, and then worked at Malooley's Supermarket in Spring Valley and Hennepin Food Mart. He later worked at Hobbs Corporation in Spring Valley and started U.S. No. 1 Taco concession stand on wheels and CoCo's Restaurant and Pool Hall in DePue, and U.S. No. 1 Taco Restaurant in Peru before retiring in 2000. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in DePue, DePue VFW, DePue Booster Club, DePue Men's Club, and Bureau County Democrat Club. Survivors include two daughters, Michelle (Jeremy) DellaValle of Peoria and Rebecca Venegas; one brother, Michael of Spring Valley; one sister, Dolores Cruz of DePue; three sons, Vincent Michael Venegas of Melbourne, Fla., John J. Venegas of Streator and Patrick Venegas; and one grandchild. He also was preceded in death by one brother, Frank; and three grandchildren, Avery Rose and Ryan Cooper DellaValle, and Toni-Lee Venegas. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Barto Funeral Home, DePue, and at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, DePue, with the Rev. Kevin Creegan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, DePue, with military graveside rites conducted by the DePue VFW.
