Riordan wins another CYC title

Spring Valley’s Carrie Riordan won last week’s Country Youth Classic at ISU’s Weibring Golf Course in Normal.

Riordan, who will be returning for her senior golf season at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, scored rounds of 74 and 76, for a 6-over 150. Runner-up Becky Allen of Western Illinois was two strokes back. Jacklyn Janson, who won the IHSA Class A title last fall, was third at 153.

It was a great win, her second in three years playing the tournament, because Riordan thought she blew it on the last four holes of the first round after going 3 under through 14.

“I fell apart and shot 2 over and tied for second after the first day. I was upset about that,” she said.

Riordan will be playing in the Illinois Open in Romeoville at the end of July and comes back to defend her title in the Illinois Valley Women’s Open in August.

• Joke’s on him: Ron Hammitt of Princeton knows a good joke when he hears one and he figured this one was on him.

Hammitt said he thought his shot on the 155-yard, 17th hole at Hidden Lake Country Club on June 24 was short of the hole. Then his son, Rob, told him, it was in the hole.

“I said, ‘Yeah, sure. They’re joking me,’” Hammitt said.

Hammitt, 64, said it was first hole-in-one of his life and probably his last.

“I don’t golf good. It was just a lucky 8-iron shot,” he said.

• Spring Creek ace: Spring Creek Golf Course in Spring Valley saw its fourth hole-in-one of the season when Tom Odell of Wyanet aced the 170-yard No 3 hole with his Ping 9 iron. It was first the hole-in-one for Odell, 56, witnessed by Keith Wol-brecht, Alan Wolbrecht, Dave Pharmer, Scott Bick-ett, Ken Wilson and Kevin Hieronymus, all of Princeton.

• Relay for life: The sixth annual Tony’s Relay for Life Golf Outing was held on June 14 at Mendota Golf Club with 78 golfers participating. The event is held in memory of Tony Bonnell, who died in 2002 of kidney cancer. This year’s outing netted a profit near $4,500, bringing the six-year total to more than $24,500 given to the American Cancer Society.
