District 20 roundup

Mother Nature won out Thursday across District 20, washing out all sites, except for Minonk, which got the first of two Junior League Baseball games in before the rains came south.

The rains came down again Friday, but the ground crews managed to get the fields playable.

Here’s a rundown of this week’s baseball and softball action.

Minor League Softball: Princeton and Spring Valley suffered heart-breaking defeats in the 9- and 10-year-old girls’ division on Wednesday at Zearing Park in Princeton

LaSalle’s Allison Korson stroked a two-run, walk-off single in the bottom of the sixth inning to overtake Spring Valley 17-16 in the first game. In the nightcap, which ended at 10:30 p.m. Mendota rallied from a 6-3 deficit after four innings to defeat Princeton 7-6 with three runs in the top of the sixth.

Princeton’s Mychaela Frank struck out 14 Mendota batters through six innings, allowing just two hits. Ivy Rhodes and Alisa Holmbeck each had RBI singles for Princeton.

Peru remained undefeated with a 6-0 win Friday over Oglesby. It will await Saturday’s winner between Oglesby and LaSalle on Sunday.

Junior League Softball: Oglesby gained its second district champion of the week when its 13- and 14-year-olds topped Peru 6-4 at St. Mary’s Park in LaSalle on Wednesday. Oglesby, which earlier won the Little League crown, advances to the Junior Sectional in Sterling.

Minor League Baseball: Spring Valley moved on with a 5-3 win Wednesday over neighbor Ladd, but was knocked out with an 8-3 loss to Ottawa Friday in the 9- and 10-year-old boys’ division.

Princeton was eliminated with a 6-3 loss to Ottawa on Wednesday.

The district finals will be held at Ottawa American two days after the divisions end.

Junior League Baseball: Two-time defending champion Princeton was knocked out in two games, the final blow a 6-4 setback at the hands of Streator on Wednesday. Princeton fell by the same 6-4 score to Bi-County.

Spring Valley bowed out Thursday with a 5-4 loss to LaSalle.

Senior League Baseball: Undefeated Bi-County is in the driver’s seat, awaiting the winner of Friday’s contest between Streator and Mendota. Princeton was eliminated with 6-4 losses to Bi-County and Streator. Spring Valley/Ladd did not field a team.
