Cross country off to a hot start
The 2008 cross country season got off and running in Walnut and Spring Valley on Tuesday. The meet in Walnut, where Princeton joined Bureau Valley, was cut back to 2.2 miles due to the extreme heat that Storm coach Dale Donner said was the hottest in recent memory.
The BV boys placed four runners in the top six and five in the top nine to score 26 points to beat out Henry/Midland (42), Princeton (71) and IVC (84).
BV scored well with second place Tevis Mott (12:12) and the 4-6 pack of the BV Johnson trio — Derrick Johnson (12:48), Trent Johnson (12:58) and Ryan Johnson (13:01). Donner said his freshmen boys ran well for their first race, despite the heat.
Princeton’s lead men was 8th Zach Kieffe (13:11) and 12th Jacob Mead (14:01).
Henry/ Midland’s Ken Swartz (12:00) won the boys’ race and Raven Pettry (15:01) the girls’ race. PHS freshman Emma Makransky finished third in her debut in 16:11, two spots ahead of BV’s Cassie Olson (17:00).
IVC won the girls’ meet, defeating PHS 32-61. BV was fourth at 82.
At Spring Valley — The campus of Hall High School was the site for the first meet of the season for the Red Devils. Both Hall squads placed second.
The Hall boys took second behind Marquette, 29-51, while defeating Mendota (63), Ottawa (98) and L-P (133). Red Devil Scott Janusick (17:18.5) placed five seconds behind race winner Jake Barr of Men-dota. Teammate T.J. Mos-bach (17:54) was fourth.
For the girls, Mendota edged Hall 50-53, led by race winner Hailey Sack (21:48.1). Hall’s Elizabeth Mosbach (23:41.2) took third and Lexi Fonderoli (25:08.2) was sixth.
Boys’ soccer
Princeton 9, Mendota 1: It was an intensely hot, humid early-September day with few clouds in the sky. But it was definitely pouring Princeton goals.
The Tigers scored five goals in the first half and four more in the second to rein over host Mendota 9-1 in NCIC soccer Tuesday. The Princeton F/S kicked in eight goals in an 8-2 win.
Matt McClure had three goals and three assists and Reiter Bird had three goals and two assists. Also scoring for PHS were Brandon Dressler, Scott Roseberg and Curtis Reed.
Boys’ golf
At Streator — Princeton finished fourth and St. Bede sixth of six teams in Monday’s Streator Bulldog Invitational at the Streator Country Club. Ottawa scored a team low 294.
Princeton was paced by Collin Slattery’s 83 and Aaron Quanstrom’s 85, followed by Eric Bickett (93), Calvin Baker (94) and Brandon Poss (96). For St. Bede, Alex Harrison scored a 94, Garrett Fouth a 97, J.R. Switek a 99 and Alex Draper a 100.
The F/S held their own meet at Anderson Field Golf Course, won by L-P (34). Again, PHS (365) was fourth and St. Bede (374) sixth. Blair Bickett and Anthony Campbell each shot 87s for PHS with Ryan Michael adding a 92 and Blake Anderson a 99.
At Deer Valley — Jordan Twidell (45) and Eric Ringle (47) topped Bureau Valley (195) in action Tuesday against Byron (155) and Rock Falls (159).
Girls’ golf
At Streator — Gwen Holmes and Alyssa James shared medalist honors at 45 to lead Princeton (193) to victory Tuesday over Midland (226) and St. Bede (230). Also scoring for PHS were Kaitlyn Ribar (50) and Alizabeth Fiorini (53). St. Bede’s Becki Prokup was third best at 47.
Volleyball
At LaMoille — Ashton-Franklin Center spoiled the debut of the LaMoille/Ohio co-op by handing the Lady Lions a 25-11, 25-16 setback. Hallie May led the Lady Lions with five points and four kills and three aces. Jolett Rod had four points and two aces.
At Kewanee — Black Hawk East defeated visting IVCC in four games, Tuesday. LaMoille’s Laura Lovgren had seven kills and Spring Valley’s Katelyn Hanson five kills for IVCC.
