Bureau County Emergency Communications personnel and area telecommunicators attended an April 14 program focusing on the telecommunicator’s role during mass shooting events. City of DeKalb telecommunicators Linda Besler and Heide Durham presented the program based on their experiences during the shooting at Northern Illinois University in February 2008. The program stressed the importance of pre-planning and training for such events as well as developing an interoperability of communications between all emergency departments including fire, police and EMS.
