TISKILWA — C. W. “Bill” Hamilton, 78, of 445 Galena St., Tiskilwa, died Monday, April 20, 2009, at the University of Illinois Chicago Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born on Jan. 12, 1931, in Macomb to Charles and Marie (Burright) Hamilton. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western Illinois University and did post graduate work at Louisiana State University. He taught in Manlius for three years, served as principal at Tiskilwa Grade School for 15 years, and was the regional superintendent of schools in Bureau County for 16 years. He married Doris Travis on June 3, 1956, in Tiskilwa.

He was a member of the Tiskilwa Community Church, and had served as deacon and was a member of the church choir. He was a 50-year volunteer and member of the board for the American Red Cross, a member of the Princeton Elks Lodge No. 1461, trustee of the Jesse A. Perry Trust Fund, had served as district governor and council chairman of the Lions of Illinois, was chairman of the International Convention Committee for Lions of Illinois, and was a Charter member of the Tiskilwa Lions Club. He was a member of the Tiskilwa Village Board, mayor of Tiskilwa, volunteer fireman and active in the Bureau County Emergency Services and Disaster agency. He had been president of the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents, and served on the executive board of Illinois Curriculum Council.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Hamilton of Tiskilwa; two daughters, Lori (David) Compton of Tiskilwa and Kristi (Douglas) Compton of Princeton; five grandchildren, Ashley, Danielle, Drew, Chelsea and Ean Compton; and one brother, Gene (Vae) Hamilton of Hickory, N.C.

He was preceded by his parents and one brother, Don Hamilton.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Tiskilwa Community Church with the Rev. Michael Abel and Michael Massey officiating. Burial will be in Elm Lawn Cemetery, Princeton.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Fiocchi-Jensen Funeral Home, Princeton.

Memorials may be directed to the Bureau County Red Cross or for a scholarship fund that will be established at a later date.
