Memorial Day services
The following Memorial Day services were submitted to the BCR:
BUDA — The Buda American Legion Post 261 will conduct its traditional Memorial Day services at 10 a.m. May 25 at the Hopeland Cemetery, west of Buda by Mautino State Park. In case of rain, the service will be in the main gym at the Bureau Valley South Elementary and Junior High School.
Guest speakers for the service will be Bill Hebel of Kewanee and Gaile Arnold of Buda. Hebel is a former member of the honor guard team who guard the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
The American Legion Post and Auxiliary will conduct traditional military services followed by the 21-gun salute, and taps by Joan Maas of Sheffield.
DEPUE — St. Mary’s Cemetery Memorial Day Mass will be celebrated Monday at 9 a.m. Bring lawn chairs and park cars facing north. Coffee and rolls will be served after Mass in the church hall. In case of rain, the service will be held in St. Mary’s Church. All are welcome.
LADD — The Ladd American Legion Post 938 will conduct Memorial Day services at Ray Barto Memorial Park in Seatonville at 8:15 a.m.; at the Berean Cemetery at 8:50 a.m.; at the Cherry Miner’s Cemetery at 9:15 a.m.; at Dalzell Memorial Park at 10:30 a.m.; at the Ladd Cemetery at 11 a.m.; at War Memorial Park in Ladd, with Lt. Adam Wilson speaking, at 11:30 a.m. and at Greenfield Cemetery in LaMoille, with guest speaker Brian Lampe, at 12:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend. In case of inclement weather, some services may be canceled, but the 11:30 a.m. service would be held in St. Benedict’s social hall in Ladd and the 12:30 p.m. service would be held at the Allen Grade school gym in LaMoille.
LAMOILLE — Memorial Day services will be held at 12:30 p.m. May 25 at Greenfield Cemetery. Brian Lampe of American Legion Post 938 will be the speaker. Kevin Weeks of Zion Evangelical Church will bring the invocation and benediction. Donald Simpson of American Legion Post 1043 will preside over decoration of graves.
MANLIUS — Memorial Day services will begin at 10 a.m. May 25 at the Village Park. Bring your own lawn chair.
NEPONSET — American Legion Post 875 will host Memorial Day services at 11 a.m. Monday in the Neponset Community Building. Glen Morey of Mineral, a former U.S. Marine, will present the keynote address. Weekend events will honor all veterans and active military personnel.
OHIO — St. Mary’s Cemetery Memorial Day services will begin at 8 a.m. May 25 with Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church. A collection will be taken to defray cemetery operating costs. Following Mass, participants will drive to St. Mary’s Cemetery on Baseline Road north of Ohio where a rosary service, conducted by the Rev. Daniel Wilder, will take place.
PRINCETON — American Legion Post 125 and the Legion Auxiliary will conduct Memorial Day services beginning with graveside services at Oakland Cemetery at 8 a.m. followed by services at Elm Lawn at about 8:20 a.m. after the Oakland services conclude. Then services will continue at Prairie Repose Cemetery at Dover about 8:50 a.m., and Malden Cemetery at 9:15 a.m. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Nelson’s Drug Store and travel Main Street to Soldiers and Sailors Park. At the park, Dr. Louis Foley will emcee the program. Navy veteran David Olson, a member of the American Legion Post 125, will speak.
SPRING VALLEY — Memorial Day services will be held at 2 p.m. May 25 at Valley Memorial Park. In the event of a rain-out, the event will be moved to John K. Kennedy School in Spring Valley.
Opening remarks will be by Rep. Frank Mautino and the address will be by Command Sgt. Major Tom Root. Katie Nett will sing the “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America” accompanied by the Spring Valley Municipal Band. Deacon John Murphy will lead the invocation and benediction.
After remembrances, placing of the wreaths and taps, the Chesnut LIght Artillery will fire a cannon salute.
TAMPICO — The annual Tampico Memorial Day Cemetery Walk will be held Monday starting at St. Mary’s Cemetery. The walk will end in the Tampico Memorial Cemetery.
In case of inclement weather, the presentations will be at the Historical Society Building, 119 Main St.
VAN ORIN — Memorial Day services will be held at 10 a.m. May 25 at the Bache Chapel in Van Orin Repose cemetery, 1/2 mile west of Van Orin, on Route 92. Refreshments will be provided after the service.
WALNUT — The American Legion of Walnut invites everyone to the Memorial Day services at 11 a.m. May 25 at the Walnut Cemetery. Walnut’s current members of the armed forces will be honored by presenting a Blue Star Banner to their parents. Anyone with a family member in the service is eligible to display a Blue Star Banner in their window.
WYANET — Beginning at 10 a.m. on Memorial Day, May 25, participants will march from the Methodist church, arriving at Forrest Hill Cemetery at 10:20 a.m. for services. Anyone with questions may call Steven Day at (815) 699-7005 or (815) 503-9733.
