IVC uses steal of home to edge Fieldcrest
Coach Jerry Rashid and his IVC Grey Ghosts stole a sectional championship from the Fieldcrest Knights.
Rashid called for a steal of home with the game tied at 1 in a pitcher’s duel between IVC ace Chris Razo and Fieldcrest’s Lee Weld. The move surprised the Knights and IVC’s Cody Kentzel, who successfully stole home with the winning run in IVC’s 2-1 win.
Rashid told the Peoria Journal Star, the way Weld, a Southern Illinois recruit was pitching, “We had to try something.”
The Grey Ghosts (30-4) advanced to Monday’s Rock Island Sectional to face Morrison. The Mustangs rode off with the Mendota Sectional crown with a 12-2 win over Byron.
