Agricultural summary for June 1
Variable weather patterns across the state led to an average of 3.5 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil was still quite wet and rated at 2 percent short, 57 percent adequate and 41 percent surplus.
Corn is reported at 82 percent planted and 52 percent emerged with an average height of 5 inches. Many farmers in the northern districts were able to finish up corn plantings, even if it was done in less than ideal conditions. Planting corn in the southern half of the state was brought to a halt due to continued rains, and this will lead to some corn acreage being replanted.
As some farmers contemplate switching their corn to soybeans, soybeans are coming in at 34 percent planted and 6 percent emerged. Temperatures statewide averaged 66.5 degrees, .3 degrees above average. Precipitation averaged 1.4 inches, up .39 inches from normal across the state.
