HCE meeting
PRINCETON — The Northwest Princeton unit of HCE will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Wise Guys in Princeton for dinner. Those able to attend are asked to call Pat Rod for reservations.
DePue municipal band
DEPUE — The DePue municipal band will perform at 7 p.m. today, Thursday, and again July 9 and 16 at the DePue Lake Park shelter.
Cookout set
PRINCETON — The Princeton High School cheerleaders will host a cookout from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Sullivans. The cheerleaders will serve hot dogs, chips and soft drinks. All proceeds from this fundraising event will go toward new warmup suits for their football and basketball seasons.
Special event
PRINCETON — In honor of this year’s Lincoln Bicentennial, the Bureau County Historical Society will host a special celebration at 10 a.m. Saturday at Soldiers and Sailors Park in Princeton. This family event will commemorate Abraham Lincoln’s July 4, 1856, visit to Princeton. On that date, Lincoln and Princeton abolitionist Owen Lovejoy were keynote speakers at a large political rally in Bryant Woods at the south edge of town. The event will feature the reading of the Declaration of Independence, brief excerpts from speeches by Lincoln and Lovejoy, patriotic music and activities for children. It will last about 45 minutes. People are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. In case of rain, the event will be held at the Prairie Arts Center. After the program, the Dr. S.A. Paddock home at 832 S. Main St. will be open until noon. Owner Carol McGee will show visitors the room where Lincoln had dinner with the Paddocks on July 4, 1856. Family Night
PRINCETON — The Bureau County Farm Bureau will hold its second Farmers Market Family Night on Tuesday at Darius Miller Park in Princeton. The market will be open from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Vendors will be present to sell locally grown produce. The Farm Bureau will be on hand to entertain children with a fun educational agriculture activity. At 5:30 p.m. Chef Monika from the Chestnut Street Inn in Sheffield will prepare sample dishes made from produce purchased at the market that evening.
Band concert
PRINCETON — The Princeton Community Band will present a free concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at Soldiers and Sailors Park in Princeton. David Peterson will be guest tuba soloist on “The Old Grumbly Bear.” The band will present a special salute to all active duty, reserve and veterans of our armed services, along with several patriotic favorites. Future concerts are set for July 19, 26 and Aug. 2.
Book club meeting
PRINCETON — The Princeton Public Library Book Club will meet at 4 p.m. July 9 in the community meeting room at the library. The group will discuss “Olive Kitteridge” by Elizabeth Strout. The library will assist anyone is borrowing this book from another library. Anyone is invited to join the group, sponsored by Friends of Princeton Library, in discussing this book.
