Doug Miles of rural Neponset couldn’t help but smile when his grandaughters Tara McBride (left) of Cape Coral, Fla., and Ashtin Mercer of Kewanee tried to encourage him by standing in his cornfield to show him, despite the late planting, the corn still made it past knee-high by the Fourth of July. The weather has caused him and other area farmers real problems getting crops planted.
