Peru tops Ottawa for D20 Little League crown
District 20 Tournament
Little League Baseball: Peru, who won last week’s American Division tournament at Princeton, defeated Ottawa National 6-2, sweeping the best two out of three series at Ladd in the 11- and 12-year-old district championship. Peru moves on to sectionals at Manteno.
Minor League Baseball: Peru topped Princeton, 16-10, in a battle of 9- and 10-year-old undefeated teams Thursday. Jake Farraher led Princeton with three singles..
Princeton came back Friday to defeat Bi-County 10-8 in seven innings and will meet Peru in Saturday’s finals at 6:30 p.m.
Bi-County eliminated Spring Valley 10-9 Thursday. Cody Saepharn and Josh Sapp each had two singles for Spring Valley, and Drew Pullam had a double.
Junior League Softball: Oglesby defeated Mendota, 7-4, Wednesday at Oglesby to capture the 13- and 14-year-old district title. Oglesby opened sectional play Friday at Veterans Park in Peru.
Minor League Softball: Mendota eliminated Princeton, 15-5, Wednesday in the 9- and 10-year-old girls tournament at Veterans Park in Peru. Alicia Holmbeck, Taylor Richardson and Sarah Ray pitched for Princeton.
Spring Valley defeated Bi-County 12-7 on Thursday and looked to avenge its previous loss to Oglesby on Friday.
• Notes: District 20 is also hosting sectional tournaments in Senior League Baseball (at Oglesby) and Junior League Baseball (M&H Field, LaSalle) this weekend and Minor League Softball in Peru next week. Mendota will be the host site for the Senior League Baseball state championship from July 25-29.
American Legion Baseball
At Quincy: Henry County Post 31 went 2-2 in the Senior Legion District Tournament this week, bowing out to Quincy, 11-9, Thursday. Post 31 ends the season at 11-11.
Post 31 fell to Oneida 13-4 in Monday’s opener with Princeton’s Daniel Murray driving in three runs.
On Tuesday, Post 31 bounced back with a 10-6 win over Farmington behind winning pitcher Ryan Bumphrey. Ryan Hix led Post 31 with three hits, and Bureau Valley teammate John King added two along with Princeton’s Daniel Murray, Michael Murray and Princeton teammate Drew Compton (2 RBIs).
In what Post 31 manager Aaron Murray called the “biggest slugfest I’ve ever seen,” Henry County belted out 32 hits in a 31-19 win over Abingdon on Wednesday.
Compton had a career night at the plate with five hits and 10 RBIs, including two homers and a double.
King added two triples, Bumphrey two doubles and Daniel Murray a double.
Compton wasn’t quite finished, belting a double and a triple with three RBIs in Thursday’s loss to Quincy. Michael Murray, the losing pitcher had three hits; Hix had four hits; and King added two hits.
Western Bureau Valley League
Minor League Baseball: Manlius and Wyanet will meet for the championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday in Walnut. LaMoille and Tampico vie for third place following the consolation finals between Sheffield and Annawan.
Major League Baseball: Manlius battled LaMoille, and Sheffield took on Walnut Green in Saturday’s semifinals for spots in Saturday’s 6 p.m. title game.
C Girls Softball: Ohio defeated LaMoille in Wednesday’s consolation finals. On Saturday, Wyanet will face Walnut at 1 p.m. for third place, and Annawan I meets crosstown foe Annawan II at 2 p.m. for first in Walnut.
B Girls Softball: Walnut defeated LaMoille I in Wednesday’s consolation finals while LaMoille II topped Sheffield for third place. Annawan takes on Tampico in Saturday’s finals at 4:30 p.m. in Walnut.
