Down the Memory Lane

This narrow gauge railroad, photographed at Dover, was constructed to run alongside of Route 34 while the highway was being constructed in 1924-25. The train was used to provide the supplies to build the road. Each car carried two batches of gravel, sand and cement. A crane lifted them off the railroad car and the batch would be dumped into the cement hopper for mixing. Sandy Elmore, who submitted the photos, said that Fred Wright of Malden ran the kerosene engine. Sandy also says not to forget Dover Day beginning at noon Aug. 8.
