PRINCETON — It didn’t take long for a common theme to develop in Friday’s Blue-White Scrimmage as the Princeton Tigers prepared for the upcoming 2009 football season.

Junior tailback Dylan Olson scored three touchdowns, two by run and one by pass, and senior tailback Drew Compton scored one each, all by 25 yards or more and for an average of nearly 60 yards a pop.

“Is this like Dylan and Drew run back and forth night?” a player from the PHS quipped.

Tiger coach Dave Moore was not surprised to see the track meet break out.

“They’ve both run 4.6 40s out here. That was with the grass pretty long and football shoes. So I don’t know what they’d run in track,” he said.

Junior quarterback Ben Schmidt completed a third touchdown pass to senior wideout Brock Schmidt to cap the first team scoring on the night.

Starting quarterback Brik Wedekind sat out Friday’s scrimmage, nursing some bumps and bruises. He said he’ll be ready to go for next week’s opener at Rockridge.

“Why risk him out here tonight,” Moore said. “We know he knows his plays.”

Moore said Ben Schmidt did a good job in Wedekind’s place as he learns the quarterback at the varsity game.

“Ben’s a work in progress,” Moore said. “It’s good to let him get some snaps.”

The Tiger coach said if something happened to Wedekind, he would go with Compton, who shared time behind center with Wedekind at the start of the 2008 season, in game situations.

“Drew has a year under his belt. He knows all the plays,” Moore said.

Moore stuck to his gameplan — 15 plays for the first team offense against the second team defense and then 15 plays for the scout team offense against the first string defense.

The varsity defense licked its chops against the second string offense, which included sophomore quarterback Earl Towne. The scout team broke through with a nice run by sophomore Alex Rico, but was smothered for most of the rest of the plays.

Dylan Olson caused a fumble for a safety and Compton returned an interception for a 15-yard TD.
