The Bureau Valley Storm notched their first win of the 2009 volleyball season Thursday, defeating the Lady Panthers 25-15, 25-13 at Prophetstown.
Lauren Hasbrook, Sam Neahring and Melanie Thompson each had four kills. Setter Sam Shepard had seven points and the quartet of Hasbrook, Gabby Fisch, Aubrey Franklin and Thompson each had five points.
At Serena: The St. Bede Lady Bruins opened the 2009 season with a 26-24, 14-25, 22-25 loss to the Lady Huskers in non conference play Thursday. SBA coach Dawn Williams said Hailee Brayton and Ashton Shaw did a nice job changing positions to take over at middle when starter Kelsey Moravec left with an ankle sprain.
Kayla MacDavitt had five kills and Molly Scott four kills to lead St. Bede. Brittany Burgess (11) and Scott (10) were digs leaders while Taylor Miller served for eight points and two ace.
At Streator: Hall advanced to 2-0 on the season with a 25-20, 25-22 win over the Lady Bulldogs of Streator on the road Thursday night. Katelyn Raineri notched eight kills and three blocks, Mickey Victor tallied six kills and three blocks, and Kelle Nett knocked out seven blocks, while setter Christina Richardson registered 17 assists for the Lady Devils win. Streator topped Hall 25-23, 25-10 in sophomore action.
At DePue: DePue lost its season opener Thursday, falling to Galva 25-16, 25-23. Leading scorer for the Lady Giants was Diana Lopez (8).
Golf
At Deer Valley: Jordan Twidell shot a 44 and Chris Miller added a 46 for Bureau Valley Thursday as the Storm (186) took on Fulton (167) and Newman (188). Also scoring for BV were Riley DeBrock (48) and Alex Knisley (49). Fulton’s Evan Eissens was medalist at 39.
Cody Weborg led the BV JV with a 51.
At Spring Creek: Hall’s Nick Rounds shot a 1-under par 37 to claim medalist honors in Wednesday’s match for the Red Devils (164) in victory over Ottawa (167) and Marquette (177). Also scoring for the Red Devils were Dean Colmone (41), Cody Kirkman (42) and Ben Dagraedt (44).
Nick Epley led the Hall JV with a 47.
At Hunter’s Ridge: Princeton and Rockridge met for the first high school girls’ match at Hunter’s Ridge Thursday with the visiting Rockets edging the home squad 229-233. Alizabeth Fiorini and Jessica Headley led the Tigresses with rounds of 54, one stroke behind medalist Sydney Kilcan of Rockridge. Also on the PHS card were Tammie Searle (61), Dacia Nelson (64) and Taylor Williams (68).
Cross country
At Sandwich: Hall claimed four of the first six places, including Nos. 1-2 Scott Janusick (16:56) and T.J. Mosbach (16:57) and Nos. 5-6 Austin Pelszynski (18:43) and Bret Herrmann (18:47) to take Thursday’s quad. Hall scored 25 points to defeat Sandwich (44), Mendota (62) and Putnam County (100).
Sandwich beat the Hall girls 29-41, despite a second-place finish by Liz Mosbach (22:10), a fifth by Daniela Acamovic (23:12) and a seventh by Amber Huffaker (25:43).
At Rockford: Amboy/LaMoille’s Lorraine Stamberger placed sixth at the Rockford Auburn Invite on Wednesday, and Meredith Stamberger was 11th.
Girls’ tennis
Princeton 8, Rochelle 1: The Tigresses swept singles play Thursday over the Hubs with wins from Evinne Dimmig, Tristan Hicks, Michaela Nelson, Emily Brand, Courtney Schafer and Mandi Morrow. Doubles winners were the teams of Brand and Nelson and Dimmig and Hicks.
The teams tied JV matches 4-4 with PHS wins from Megan Jennings (8-5), Mandi Morrow and Alex Beetz (8-2), Ashley Snow and Carina Moschello (8-5) and Stacy Tonozzi and Kelsy Marvin (8-4).
PHS was a 6-2 winner in F/S play with wins from Sarah Peterson (8-1), Mackenzie Schafer (8-1), Kate Morrow (8-5) in singles and Kavita Patel and Stephanie Blessman (8-2), Kayla Fawcett and Taylor Behrends (8-6) and Taylor Joiner and Celia Kernan (8-1).
