SENICA — The Heritage Corridor Community Associates, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote adult education in the visual fine arts and to encourage membership and participation in the Art Institute of Chicago, held its membership tea and lecture Aug. 27 at Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Club.

The Lecture, “It  Only Hurts When You Laugh,” was presented by Annie Morse, senior lecturer in museum education and liaison to the academic community.

Morse coordinates the annual graduate student seminar and a Chicago-based artist lecture series, Artist Contact. She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of California at Santa Cruz and completed the master’s program in modern art history at the School of the Art Institute. She recently received her master's in library and information science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Morse shared a slide presentation of caricature drawings and paintings from throughout history depicting the artists’ views, both political and social. Drawing from the collections of the Art Institute, Morse explored the commentaries of Thomas Rowlandson, William Hogarth and Honore Daumier, to name a few. These talented artists courted popular audiences while, at the same time, risking censorship with their satirical drawings, rich in symbols both subtle and crude.

HCCA has an excellent schedule of programs for 2009-10. In September, HCCA members will enjoy a tour of the newly opened Modern Wing. October’s program features a lecture by Konstantin Grcic, one of the most important designers working today, at Rubloff Auditorium. In November, HCCA members will visit Lincoln’s Home followed by luncheon at the Lincoln Library and a self-guided tour of the Lincoln Museum. January through April promise more exciting programs. In April, HCCA Members have the opportunity to experience the Cherry Blossoms Art Tour of Washington, D.C.
