Lady Lions win Little Ten opener
The LaMoille/Ohio Lady Lions kicked off the Little Ten Conference volleyball tournament by defeating Kirkland-Hiawatha 25-17, 25-19.
Erika Walzer led the Lady Lions with six kills and Megan Swanson and Haley Stouffer added four each. Stouffer also added four aces.
Raeann Coughlin led the Lady Lions (3-15) with eight points and 11 digs with Laura Stouffer (3 aces) and Mary Bartolin serving for five points apiece.
L/O, the 8 seed, will face top-seeded Hinckley-Big Rock at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
At Orion: Bureau Valley rallied to defeat Farmington 8-21, 21-9, 15-11 to capture fifth place in Saturday’s Orion Tournament. The Storm went undefeated in pool play with wins over Farmington 21-12, 21-15, Lowpoint-Washburn 21-10, 21-1 and Rushville-Industry 21-15, 21-17. BV fell to Orion 21-15, 21-17 in the semifinals.
Annawan defeated Lowpoint-Washburn 21-17, 21-14 in the seventh-place match. The Bravettes lost to Orion, Riverdale and United.
BV’s Sam Shepard and Aubrey Franklin and Annawan’s Jordan Jackson were named to the all-tournament team.
At Byron: Princeton placed fifth in the Byron Sophomore Tournament with a 2-0 win over Eastland. The Tigresses defeated Byron 2-0 and tied Lena-Winslow and Rockton Hononegah in pool play. PHS also defeated Pecatonica 2-0.
Boys’ soccer
At Orion: The Princeton Tigers defeated the host Chargers 3-0 to take third place in Saturday’s Orion Invitational.
Reiter Bird, who was named to the all-tournament team with teammate Scott Roseberg, scored twice in the first half to give the Tigers a 2-0 halftime lead.
Zach Rosene added another goal in the second half to ice the PHS victory.
Bird’s goal at 11:09 of the second half, with an assist from his brother, Reece, was all the scoring PHS keeper Nolan Piper would need for the Tigers in a 1-0 opening shutout over Oregon.
In their second game, the Tigers ran into NCIC adversary Sterling, which scored two first-half goals en route to a 3-1 victory, it’s second win of the season over PHS. Roseberg found the net for an unassisted second half goal to cut the Sterling lead to 2-1.
“Sterling seems to have our number,” PHS coach Jason Bird said.
Peoria Woodruff won the six-team tournament. PHS did not play either Woodruff or Byron.
Boys’ golf
Hall’s Nick Rounds (75) placed ninth and Princeton’s Collin Slattery (78) finished 17th in Saturday’s LaSalle-Peru Invite at Seneca’s Oak Ridge Golf Course.
Lockport’s Anthony Lodovico was medalist at 71.
Putnam County was the lowest scoring area team in placing 14th with 338 points. Mendota (338) was 15th, Princeton (343) was 18th, Hall (346) was 20th and St. Bede (381) finished 23rd in a 23-team field.
Also scoring for Princeton were Noel Nichols (88), Austin Hellman (88) and Eric Bickett (89) with Cody Cumpton (95) and Cole Evenson (96) rounding out the Tigers’ card.
For Hall, Ben Dagraedt and Dean Colmone each shot 88s, Cody Kirkman had an 95, Ethan Brandner a 96 and Andrew Gapinski a 98.
Garrett Fouth led St. Bede at 88, the lone Bruin to crack 100. Jon Prescott (82) and John Jenkins (83) led Mendota with Kurt Hilgen’s 82 pacing Putnam County.
Cross country
At Peoria: Princeton cross country squad ran with some of the top talent in the state in Saturday’s Peoria Invitational. It was a field including many runners who will return to Detweiller Park later this month.
The PHS girls had their best team finish since 2004, placing 35th of 42 teams, despite missing three of their top seven runners, most improving on personal bests by 24 seconds or more.
Emma Makransky led the Tigresses with a time of 20:13, to finish 127th. Other scorers were Alix Forristall (20:51), Molly Stephens (21:42), Kathyrn Krieger (22:21) and Nicole Kerr (23:17) with Trisha Smith (24:19) and Caitlyn Branske (24:41) rounding out the lineup.
PHS coach Pat Hodge said his boys competed well against the tough competition, paced by Zach Kieffer, who ran his best time (17:23) in a month, to place 214th, and Greg Musselman, who ran a personal best (17:59) by almost 30 seconds to place 261st.
Also running for the Tigers were Ryan Arndt (19:44), Cody Schertz (20:12), Kyle Arnett (20:25) and Victor Wolsfeld (20:26).
Perennial state champ Elmhurst York beat Prospect for the boys’ title 37-79, led by pace-setter Andrew Smith (14:43).
At Peru: The Hall teams swept both sides of Monday’s meet with the girls topping Mendota 21-38 and the boys team scoring 20 points to best Mendota (35), St. Bede (89) and L-P (102).
Liz Mosbach (20:12) and Scott Janusich (16:23) gave Hall a pair of first-place finishes.
Also for the boys, T.J. Mosbach (16:32) was second, Austin PelszynskI fourth (17:59) and Brett Herrmann (18:04) fifth.
For the girls, Daniela Acamovic (23:18) was fourth, Amber Huffaker (24:03) fifth and Xuza Piotrowski (24:14).
Youth football
At Spring Valley: The Spring Valley Red Devils completed a perfect, 6-0 romp through the 2009 Illinois Valley Youth Football League season Sunday, downing the Oglesby Dolphins, 29-6, in the year’s swan song at Hall High School.
Collin Aimone’s 16-yard TD run put the Red Devils up 8-0 less than three minutes into the game, as Jacob Byczynski added the PAT kick.
Quarterback Taggart Venegas recorded a five-yard touchdown run with 8:58 to go in the second quarter, and the Red Devils led, 14-0.
Alic Hernandez (4-136 rushing) broke free for TD runs of 70 and 68 yards to stake the Red Devils to a 29-0 advantage with 4:44 left in the third period.
Oglesby’s Nolan Durdan’s 76-yard touchdown run with 3:58 left in the game avoided a potential shutout for the Dolphins (3-3).
Spring Valley had the ball for less than 17 of the game’s 40 minutes, but rolled up 343 yards of total offense on 34 plays.
