Bachman and Barnett named October Teens of the Month

PRINCETON — Hannah Bachman of Princeton High School and Dane Barnett of Bureau Valley High School have been named Elks Teens of the Month for October.
Princeton Elks Lodge Youth Activities Chairman Penny Best made the announcement of the award winners at the Oct. 9 luncheon meeting at the Elks Lodge.
Also honored at the Oct. 9 luncheon were Teens of the Month representatives Mary Bartoli of LaMoille High School; Denise McDermott of Ohio High School; Nicholes Kelsey and Laura Ford, both of St. Bede Academy; Julia Edington and Jonathon Stuckert, both of Hall High School; Abigail Nielsen of Bureau Valley High School; Dane Stier of Princeton High School; and Lorena Escatel of DePue High School.
The daughter of Beth Gerig and Dean Bachman, Hannah is a senior at Princeton High School and is ranked fourth in her class of 134 students. She has a grade point average of 3.978 and an ACT score of 26. She has been on the PHS honor roll for four years and a member of the National Honor Society for the last two years, serving as NHS vice president her junior year.
She has been a member of the mixed chorus and swing choir for three years each, and band, marching band, concert band and pep band four years each. She has also participated in Madrigals for three years, Star Spangled Singers two years, and taken private piano lessons for four years. She serves as the choir co-treasurer and show choir choreographer. She has also been the concert choir accompanist for three years and a member of the International Thespian Society for two years.
She has participated in school plays, musicals and Homestead Festivals. She is also a member of the German Club, Drama Club, Food Club, Book Club and Movie Club. She participated in volleyball and cross country two years and soccer four years. She received all-conference academic recognition in soccer and cross country during her junior year.
For community service, she has participated in the Big Brother/Big Sister after school program, volunteered at Menno Haven Camp and Retreat Center, and helped with Special Olympics. She has worked at a soup kitchen in Chicago, swept sidewalks in Columbus, Ohio, and worked with emergency preparedness programs. She’s also been a recreation leader for Vacation Bible School.
Her hobbies include reading, playing the piano, playing card games, and dancing at the Main Street Dance Academy, which she has done since she was 8.
Her future plans are to attend either Goshen or Hesston College to major in secondary education, probably in math.
A senior at Bureau Valley High School, Dane is the son of Kevin and Kristal Barnett of Buda. He is ranked 25th in his class of 102 students. He has a 3.35 grade point and an ACT score of 27.
He has been on the honor roll for four years and a member of the National Honor Society for the last two years.
He is vice president of the senior class, president of the Art Club, and captain of the Scholastic Bowl. He was also treasurer of the Art Club his junior year.
He has participated in the school musicals and school plays for four years and also in the Homestead Festival Play in Princeton for the last two years. He is a winner in the Illinois Art Educators Youth Art Month Poster Contest and in the IEA’s Traveling Art Show.
He has participated in chorus, mixed chorus, swing choi for two years each, and in band, marching band, pep band and concert band one year each. He has been a member of the Spanish Club, Drama Club and Scholastic Bowl for four years each. He’s also a current member of the newspaper staff and was Scholastic Bowl All-Conference for two years.
He also volunteers to announce for the Bureau Valley volleyball and basketball games and at cross country meets. He also collects recycling materials for the Advanced Science Club.
For community service, he has traveled to Mexico for a mission trip and has volunteered at vacation Bible school since sixth grade. He also volunteers as a writing tutor during homeroom. He also volunteers for the Understanding Children’s Hearts organization and has spoken at fundraisers for the American Heart Association. He designed the logo for the Congenital Heart Center. He answers phones during the annual Children’s Miracle Network telethon.
In other community service, Barnett has participated in a home make-over project in Buda, does yard work for elderly and helped paint the exterior of another home.
His hobbies include art, travel, volunteering, reading and movies, with art being his greatest passion.
He plans to attend either the School of the Art Institute of Chicago or Columbia College of Art and Design in Chicago and major in fine arts. After earning his degree, he plans to devote his life to the creation, study and teaching of art.
