Combating the economy ... with chicken?

WYANET —“‘Recession Wednesday’” at the Coffee Depot is a great idea,” said Ralph Anderson of Wyanet. “I spend most mornings here for coffee, but since Nancy started this Wednesday evening special, you will no doubt see me and my wife here with a variety of friends, enjoying good conversation along with a great dinner, all at a reasonable price.”
Coffee Depot owner Nancy Young came up with the idea of having a weekly evening special that would make it possible for families to go out together, have an enjoyable evening out without breaking the bank.
“What I didn’t expect was that my recession special would evolve into an evening where people of the community, would of course, stop in to eat my chicken, but they stay. They stay for the extra cup of coffee, soda and to visit with other diners, either at their table or an adjacent one,” Young said.
“This special is a positive for the village. By the Coffee Depot offering Wednesday evening specials, you get the chance to meet new members of the community, make new friends, all over a chicken dinner that you didn’t have to cook,” he said.
Ann Sapp, a Coffee Depot waitress, said, “I see new faces becoming our regulars. They sit with the steadfast and true, all enjoying the food as well as the company.”
“I take care of the same area of the restaurant, most days, as well as for Wednesday evenings, said Stephanie Culver, another Coffee Depot waitress. “Since Recession Wednesday, I serve the same three couples at the same table every Wednesday night. They don’t come in together, but they sit at the large table and chat together, while enjoying their meal. I think that Nancy had a great idea with this. You always see the regulars, but new people keep showing up from other communities.”
“I guess what surprises me the most is that my Friday evening and daily lunch crowd has been growing. While I am grateful for the patrons, it makes me feel good knowing that I am doing something positive for my community,” Young said.
“I don’t serve fancy, but my customers are always treated with respect and receive the kind of service that they would at any five-star restaurant,” she added.
This seems to be the general consensus of most of her customers. They all agree that while the food is hot and plentiful, the atmosphere is uplifting, positive and friendly.
Eleanor Sapp and Jeanne Towne have been regulars of the Coffee Depot for many years.
“We come for breakfast, lunch as well as dinner, whenever we feel like a good meal; and now we come in for chicken on Wednesday nights,” said Sapp.
“Currently, I serve $2 and $3 quarter chicken meals, along with a jumbo burger,” Young said. “Meals include one side, with free refills on drinks purchased. Business hours for our Wednesday Recession Special are 4:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.”
This community event began back in August of this year, and Young does not see it ending any time soon.
“I will be serving my recession special until the government ends their recession,” Young said with a chuckle. “Everyone needs a little help every so often, and if my chicken specials help out the struggling family or senior citizens or bring a small town together, it is my pleasure.”
