Former teammates reunite

You never know when familiar faces will show up in the college arena.
Former Ohio High School alums Mick Reuter and Tony Tompkins, who played together for the Bulldogs’ basketball squads in the early 90s, will square off as head coaches when Oakton Community College heads to play an exhibition at Judson University Saturday.
Reuter, a 1992 graduate from OHS, was recently named head coach for the Raiders of Oakton, which is in Des Plaines, after taking over on interim basis last season. Tompkins, a 1993 Ohio grad, is entering his second season at the helm of the Judson University in Elgin.
“It’s going to be fun,” said Reuter, who spent a month as an assistant to Tompkins last year before leaving to coach at Oakton.
Volleyball
The college volleyball season has also drawn former high school teammates and foes together. Amanda Prostko of Princeton and former Hall Lady Red Devil Jenna Luck met when North Park traveled to Rock Island Oct. 6 to face Augustana College. Luck’s Vikings of Augustana won in a 3-0 sweep over Prostko’s Vikings of North Park.
It was the first match of the season for Luck, who endured a groin injury after transferring from Lincoln College. She played in all three games with two kills and six digs. Three nights later, she led Augie (now 11-16) to a 3-2 victory over Fontbonne in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with a team-high 15 kills.
Prostko, who has played in all 92 games for NPU (9-17), has twice run into former Princeton teammate Jaimie Pearson, a sophomore at Judson University. North Park evened the score against Judson with a 3-1 win in the Sept. 18-19 Aurora Tournament. The week before, Judson made a 3-0 sweep over NPU in the NPU Invite in Chicago.
Pearson has played in 29 matches for the Lady Eagles (7-22). Prostko has played in all 95 games for NPU (9-18), averaging 3.62 assists per game.
• Erin Polte (Spring Valley) had 13 assists as a freshmen setter for Graceland University (Lamoni, Iowa) in Tuesday’s 3-0 win at home over Avila University. The Yellowjackets were 16-12 head ing into Thursday’s match vs. Grand View.
• Freshman Leah Shaw (Princeton) and the Illinois Central College Cougars defeated No. 1 ranked Kishwaukee 3-0 in the ICC Invite last weekend.
Meridith Rounds (Ladd/Hall) had eight kills and two blocks for IVCC Tuesday against Sauk Valley.
• Other area players include Breelyn McMahon (BV) at Ashford University, Kassie Klotz (St. Bede) at Lincoln College, Hallie May (Princeton) at IVCC, and Rikki Kessler (Bureau Valley) at Black Hawk East.
Golf
• Danny Nelson (Prince-ton) and St. Ambrose University hosted the NAIA Preview Invitational at TPC at Deere Run Oct. 15-16 in Silvis. Nelson tied for 29th place with a 154 total. The Bees head south Saturday to compete in the University of Mobile Fall Classic.
• Freshmen Gwen Holmes of Princeton and the Millikin Big Blue finished third in the CCIW championships Oct. 3 at Highland Park Country Club. The former BCR Golfer of the Year shot a 208 to place 39th.
Cross country
Mike Miroux placed second for Mount Mercy College in the Oct. 10 William Penn Invitational to lead the Mustangs to a second-place team finish. Miroux, a sophomore from Spring Valley, clocked a 26:26, 16 seconds off the winning pace. His brother, Kyle, a Mount Mercy freshman, finished 33rd with a time of 30:30.
• University of Illinois sophomore Colin Mickow of Princeton led the Illini by placing 71st with an 8K time of 24:47 in the Oct. 17 Pre-Nationals Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. Illinois will run in Sunday’s Big Ten championships in Happy Valley, Pa.
• Molly VonHolten, a junior from Walnut, was the 10th runner for Central College (Pella, Iowa) with a 15th-place time of 27:02.36 in the Oct. 10 Lamb-Kohawk Invite in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Football
• Junior transfer Garrett Barnas and the Northern Illinois Huskies (4-3) return home to face Akron at 11 a.m. Saturday in DeKalb. The former Bureau Valley standout is the Huskies’ back-up strong safety and has played in each of the last three games.
• Senior captain and linebacker Preston Jones of Sheffield had four tackles for Augustana College in last week’s 42-40 win over Carthage. The Vikings (4-3) travel to Chicago to face North Park Saturday.
• Former Bureau Valley products Josh Coyle, a senior lineman at Quincy University, and Matt Morman, a junior d-back at Monmouth, are also suiting up this season.
Soccer
• Jarred Jaggers, a senior from Princeton, is the second leading scorer for Knox College with five goals for 10 points. He scored one goal in the Prairie Fire’s 5-2 loss Oct. 24 to Beloit College.
• Former PHS teammate Bryan Jackson is a senior soccer player at Knox rival Monmouth. he has started 11 games for the Fighting Scotts (2-11-1).
