KEWANEE — Four Bureau County residents were recognized in October when the Black Hawk East College Foundation honored both those who gave and those who received at its annual scholarship banquet at the Kewanee Dunes. This year the foundation, which was chartered 41 years ago, awarded 49 scholarships to 43 recipients.
Kimberly Harmon of Neponset received the Peterson-Martin Engineering Scholarship, and the Piper Scholarship; Nichole Karau, also of Neponset, received the Theodore & Penny Vlahos Scholarship; Daniel Smith of Walnut received the Black Hawk East Alumni Scholarship and Kole Price of Wyanet received the Anderson Memorial Scholarship
During the banquet, recipients shared what receiving the scholarship meant to them, as well as their plans for the future. The benefactors and scholarship representatives in attendance also were introduced and recognized.
“Walt Disney once said, ‘If you can dream it, you can do it,’” R. Gene Gardner, Black Hawk College interim president said. “Remember that often times the limits that we define for ourselves are self-described if you will. Your efforts will pay indeed big dividends in the future.”
