NEPONSET — The Neponset Public Library is honored to be one of 128 Illinois public libraries to be awarded funds from the Opportunity Online Grant Program sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This grant will be given out over a two-year period. The Neponset library was chosen after meeting specific criteria for financial assistance to update its aging computers.
Neponset Public Library Director Carissa Faber and Treasurer/Library Trustee Annette Williams attended Turning the Page: Building Your Library Community conference in Decatur on Oct. 21-22. The conference was in support of the Opportunity Online hardware program. They heard from inspirational speaker Kevin Carroll, (author of “Rules of the Red Rubber Ball”), networked with peers, and worked within interactive sessions that covered important topics such as local fundraising ideas and development of an advocacy work plan for the library.
The Opportunity Online Grant Program will help Illinois libraries build the support and momentum to sustain high-quality technology services for communities for many years to come. State Librarian Jesse White sent a letter stating that public libraries remain the best, most reliable, and often only source our Illinois citizens have for access. This access is especially important during these difficult and uncertain economic times.
White said the program is designed to build the sustainability of free computer and Internet access at public libraries. More information on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is available online at www.gatesfoundation.org/.
LASALLE — The LaSalle Public Library will host folk musician and balladeer Lee Murdock in a holiday concert at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 17.
