PRINCETON — Hubert J. Burgess, 84, of Princeton, and formerly of Dixon, died Thursday Nov. 5, 2009, at Colonial Hall Care Center in Princeton.

Born Aug. 23, 1925, in Dixon to Chlorus and Marie (Koehler) Burgess, he married Helen Walker Sept. 16, 1950, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon.

He had been a fireman for the City of Dixon Fire Department for 22 years prior to his retirement. He had also been a handyman for many years in Dixon.

He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Princeton; three children, Thomas (Bonnie) Burgess of Rochelle, Michael (Linda) Burgess of Dixon and Paula Thompson of Princeton; seven grandchildren, Lindsie Doran of Bartonville, Kaitlin Thompson of Princeton, Connor Thompson of Princeton, Tyler Burgess of Las Vegas, Nev., Jamie Burgess of Tampa, Fla., Danielle Burgess of Florida and Jeremy Burgess of Rochelle; four great-grandchildren, Mercadez Burgess of Dixon, Jordan Burgess of Rochelle, and Claire Marie Doran and Jax Edward Doran of Bartonville; two brothers, Arthur (Lois) Burgess of Harmon and Richard (Shirley) Burgess of Dixon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Diane Louise Burgess.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed his family and fishing.

Services will be Monday beginning with a 10 a.m. prayer service at the Jones Funeral Home in Dixon followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon with the Rev. James Keenan, pastor, officiating. Cremation will follow with burial of cremains at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rosary at 5:30 p.m.
