Princeton Public Library holds events to commemorate Cherry Mine Disaster
PRINCETON — In honor of the centennial commemoration of the Cherry Mine Disaster, the Princeton Public Library will host the following events:
• At 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, author Steve Stout will present slides and speak about his books and the Cherry Mine Disaster.
• The library will show the film “How Green was my Valley” at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
• On Thursday, the Princeton Fire Department will arrive at 4 p.m. for children to see and explore. At 7 p.m., a family-oriented program will be held focusing on fire safety and historical information connected to the disaster.
• At 1:15 p.m. on Friday, the day of the disaster, churches have been invited to “Ring in Remembrance” their church bells, remembering the 259 men and boys who died on Nov. 13, 1909. At 7 p.m., historian and labor folksinger, will perform a family-oriented program.
Beginning Monday, the exhibit’s artifacts and photography, including the screen prints displayed in front of the building, are being borrowed by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield.
