Mickow earns Big Ten sportsmanship award

Colin Mickow continues to lead the Fighting Illini cross-country team on the course and is receiving awards off it.

The sophomore from Princeton was named as University of Illinois’ men’s cross-country team’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. One member of each Big Ten team is selected for the honor, which recognizes sportsmanship and ethical behavior. Award winners must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

Mickow has led the Fighting Illini in every race he has run this season, including a 25th-place finish in the Big 10 meet in State College, Pa., with a 5.2 mile time of 26:04. He improved 25 spots from his freshmen season.

His twin, Hunter, is not running this fall, due to injury.

• Mount Mercy sophomore Mike Miroux (Spring Valley) qualified for the NAIA Nationals with a fourth-place finish in the Midwest Collegiate Conference meet on Nov. 7 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, with an 8K time of 26:46. His brother, Kyle, was 30th in 30:20. Nationals will be held Nov. 21 in Vancouver, Wash.

• Former Bureau Valley Storm runner Jessica (Wallace) Seargent, 28, and the Sauk Valley women will be running in Saturday’s national finals in Peoria. Sauk won last week’s regional at Sugar Grove with Seargant placing 29th in 27:41.

Football

• Matt Morman helped the Monmouth Fighting Scots cap their second straight 10-0 record and Midwest Conference championship with 10 tackles in their Nov. 7 42-0 win over rival Knox in the Bronze Turkey Game. The junior DB out of Bureau Valley is second on the team with 41 tackles.

Monmouth is ranked eighth in Division III and awaiting their playoff pairing announcement Sunday.

• Senior captain Preston Jones will play his final game for Augustana College Saturday at Millikin in Decatur. The Vikings are 5-4.

• Garrett Barnas and the Northern Illinois Huskies beat/lost to Ball State Thursday night in DeKalb. The junior safety out of Bureau Valley had three tackles in last week’s 50-6 win over Eastern Michigan.

• Members of the PHS Sportsman Club who made the trip to Black Bear Lodge in Ontario will be interested in watching the Illinois-Northwestern game today. Zeke Markshausen, son of former BBL owners Kim and Susan, is the leading receiver for the Wildcats. He is No. 85.
