The Cherry Comet returns for her senior season for CSU. The two-time Horizon League selection was named as the Horizon League’s Preseason Player of the Year and hasn’t disappointed those voters in the early going.
The senior guard led the Lady Vikings in Sunday’s 77-62 loss to Toledo with 19 points and seven rebounds. Klein had 12 points in CSU’s opening night 56-34 win over Ohio.
She needs 307 points to become CSU’s all-time leading scorer.
• Hall grad Korby Kas-perski scored 22 points for IVCC in Thursday’s 111-96 win over Rock Valley ... Some additions to last week’s area college hoop lineup include LaMoille’s Luke Delong. who is a freshman at Judson University and Ladd’s Jen Andes, who is a junior at St. Francis University.
Cross country
University of Illinois sophomore Colin Mickow ran down All-Region honors in Saturday’s regionals in Springfield, Mo. The sophomore from Princeton finished 18th overall with a 10 K time of 31:18. He was the fifth individual from non-qualifying teams, but just the top four individuals advance to nationals.
Mickow has followed Buda’s Jason Bill’s footsteps in becoming the second Bureau County native to be the Fighting Illini’s No. 1 runner.
Another former BCR Runner of the Year, Matt Morse of St. Bede, finished 48th (32:25.7) for the University of Illinois-Chicago. He is a junior.
• Mounty Mercy College sophomore Mike Miroux (Spring Valley/Hall) will run in the NAIA Nationals in Vancouver, Wash., Sat-urday. He finished fourth in the Midwest College Conference Meet Nov. 7.
Volleyball
Leah Shaw and the Illinois Central College Cougars are the top seed in the nationals at Wisconsin Dells. The Cougars defeated Kalamazoo in their first match Thursday 3-0 and were to face three-time champ Kishwaukee in Friday’s semifinals.
Shaw, a freshman from Princeton, averages 0.88 blocks per set.
Football
Matt Morman (Bureau Valley) and the No. 8-ranked Monmouth College Fighting Scots will face No. 10 University of St. Thomas at noon Saturday in Monmouth. Both teams average better than 40 points a game. Morman, a junior defensive back, will be out to slow down the St. Thomas offense.
