Red Devils win opener at Seneca Tournament

The Hall Red Devils opened up the season with a 52-40 win Monday in a meeting of two programs with state tournament history.
Billy Gaull led the Red Devils with 17 points, and Anthony Urbanski added 10 points.
Hall made back-to-state runner-up finishes in the mid-’90s. St. Anne won the first 1A title in 2008 and took fourth in Class A in 1973, led by future NBA star Jack Sikma.
Hall fell to the host Seneca Irish 41-25 Wednesday. Seneca is coached by former Hall head coach Russell Witte, who took over this year for retired longtime coach Doug Evans.
The Red Devils will next take on Hinckley-Big Rock at 3 p.m. Friday leading into Saturday’s finals.
Annawan 51, Rockridge 22: Matt DeDecker had 22 points for the Braves, who had little problem with the Rockets in tournament play Tuesday at Orion.
Lowpoint-Washburn 74, DePue 27: The Little Giants fell to 0-2 in the Streator Woodland Warrior Thanksgiving Tournament with Tuesday’s loss to the Tri-County rival Wildcats. Kyle Wachs scored 12 points for the Little Giants. DePue dropped Monday’s opener to Paw Paw 53-35.
Girls’ basketball
Putnam County 43, DePue 30: The Lady Panthers recorded their first win of the season in Monday’s T-C opener. Carmen Lopez had 10 points for the Lady Little Giants. Abby Hoffman and Alyssa Hoffman had nine each for PC.
Annawan 74, LaMoille/Ohio 27: Lorraine Stamberger led the Lady Lions (0-4) Monday with 12 points.
Bureau Valley 43, Prophetstown 39: The Storm improved to 4-0 by defeating the Lady Prophets in Tuesday’s TRAC-8 opener. BV got a combined 25 points from its bigs, Melanie Thompson (15) and Lauren Hasbrook (10), while Meghan Mussche added nine.
Fieldcrest 38, Hall 36: The Lady Knights outscored their Spring Valley guests 14-9 in the fourth quarter to post Tuesday’s non-conference victory. Jacyln Kain had 10 points and Brigitte Klein had eight for Hall.
