St. Bede’s Schwab sets tournament record at Serena
Alec Schwab and the St. Bede Bruins finished out the Serena Kick-Off Classic with a flourish Wednesday.
Schwab poured in a tournament single-game record of 33 points to carry the Bruins to an 82-47 win over Serena. The junior guard nailed six three-point shots in the game, including three in the third quarter when the Bruins extended a 37-25 halftime lead to 57-39.
“We decided to pressure the ball full court and immediately things turned around. We sped the game up offensively and defensively and really rolled the second half. I think we scored eight points at one time in about 10 seconds with a lay up and a couple threes off steals,” SBA coach Terry Nelson said.
Schwab’s 33 points trumped the 31 points Newark’s John Avery scored two nights earlier.
“He’s just a really tough matchup. He pretty much took the game over,” Nelson said. “I talked to him this summer about what I thought he was capable of doing and that I would give him a lot of freedom and he has really responded. (He’s averaging) 24.7 points after three games. And he will get better.”
Evan Duttlinger (11) and Ross Kenseth (9) combined for 20 more for the Bruins, who finished the tournament at 2-1. St. Bede took second place behind undefeated Newark with Serena (1-2) finishing third.
Schwab and Denis were named to the all-tournament team along with Kyle Anderson and John Avery of Newark, Brady Johnson of Serena and Danny Heath of Leland/Earlville.
The St. Bede Cubs finished a 3-0 run in the F/S tournament to claim first place.
The Bruins had a special guest in NASCAR great Matt Kenseth, father of St. Bede’s Ross Kenseth.
At Woodland: Flanagan/Cornell 46, DePue 35: The Little Giants played the Falcons even at 11-11 through the first quarter and took a 21-17 lead at the half. The Falcons turned the tables with a 14-4 third quarter and a 15-10 fourth quarter.
Kyle Waches led DePue with 14 points and Anthony Waites had nine.
At Wethersfield: Wethersfield 56, Bureau Valley 54: Kyle Bumphrey hit two free throws to give the host Geese the win in tournament play Wednesday. Alex Franklin had 16 points and Ryan Hix added a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
At Seneca: Seneca 41, Hall 25: Hall ran into a familiar face Wednesday when it met the host Irish and coach Russell Witte. Witte was head coach at Hall from 2003-05. Billy Gaull led the Red Devils with 14 points.
