MANLIUS — On Feb. 18, Abby Nielsen and Donna McCune traveled to Geneseo High School to represent the Bureau Valley FFA in the Section 3 Public Speaking Contest. Nielsen competed in the prepared division, while McCune competed in the extemporaneous division in which she drew her topic at the contest and was given 25 minutes to write a three- to five-minute speech.

Upon their arrival at Geneseo High School, the FFA members drew numbers to determine what order they would give their speeches in. Since the FFA members drew higher numbers, they were some of the last to give their speeches. To pass the time, the Bureau Valley FFA members chatted with FFA members with other schools.

McCune gave her freshly-written speech on animal health before Nielsen gave her prepared speech on store-bought food versus home-grown food. The FFA members were very successful with Nielsen finishing sixth in Section 3, and McCune finishing second in Section 3. McCune will advance to the District 1 Public Speaking Competition on April 7 at Kewanee High School.
