PRINCETON — Princeton Mayor Keith Cain has announced he will seek a fourth term in office.

At Tuesday’s Princeton City Council meeting, Cain announced two commissioner seats and the mayoral seat will be open for election on the April 5, 2011, ballot. The open commissioner seats are currently held Joni Hunt and Ray Swanson.

After Tuesday’s meeting, all three confirmed they will seek re-election.

In seeking another term in office, Cain said there are still a few more things he’d like to see accomplished for the city. He’s proud of what has been accomplished and of his record as mayor, Cain said.

Hunt said she decided to seek re-election because she’s put a lot of effort into learning the position during the last two years, and she wants to continue to move forward and continue to serve the community as a commissioner. Hunt currently serves as commissioner for the Department of Public Health and Safety. Hunt has been a member of the city council since September 2008.

Swanson is seeking his third term as a city commissioner and currently serves as commissioner for the Department of Streets and Public Improvements. In seeking re-election, Swanson said the council has a lot of projects in the making, and he’d like to be a part of continuing those projects and seeing them through. Also, the city council is a good team that moves ahead in a progressive way for the city, and he wants to continue to be a part of that team.

To be eligible to run for a position on the Princeton City Council, a person must be a registered voter and have at least one year residency in the city before the election, Bureau County Clerk Kami Hieronymus said Wednesday. Also, the person can not have any indebtedness to the city, such as unpaid bills or back taxes, she said.

Candidate petitions and packets are available from Princeton City Hall or may also be ordered from the Illinois State Board of Elections.

The filing period for candidates is Nov. 15-22. Petitions must be filed either by mail or in person at the city clerk’s office, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
