MINERAL/ARLINGTON/SEATONVILLE — Five down, three to go.

The final meetings regarding the possible closing of post offices in Bureau County have been scheduled.

Customers of the Mineral, Arlington and Seatonville post offices are receiving letters this week notifying them the U.S. Postal Service is “conducting a discontinuance feasibility study of facility operations.” In July, the Postal Service announced that post offices in Arlington, Bureau, Dover, Kasbeer, Mineral, New Bedford, Seatonville and Van Orin were on the list of more than 3,600 retail offices nationwide that will be studied to determine customers needs. The other five meetings were conducted during the past week.

Mineral customers were told that if their post office was closed, they would have the option of post office box delivery at the Sheffield Post Office, or they could fill out a form requesting establishment of rural delivery service. The letter included the distance to the Sheffield Post Office — 5.5 miles — and its retail hours.

If the Arlington post office closes, those residents were also given the option of post office box delivery at the Malden Post Office — 7.1 miles away — or they could fill out a form requesting establishment of rural delivery service. Hours and distance to the Cherry Post Office — 3.6 miles — were also provided.

Seatonville residents were told their mail service would be moved to the Spring Valley Post Office — 6.3 miles away — if the Seatonville office closed, or they could request rural delivery service. Hours and distance to the Ladd Post Office — 4.3 miles — were also provided.

A community meeting to explain the process and to address community concerns will be held in Mineral at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Building located at 146 E. Main St.

The Arlington community meeting will he held at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Village Hall located at 208 Jay St., with the Seatonville meeting to follow at 6:30 p.m. at the village hall located at 105 Center St.
