Aurora Navy League Council will meet Jan. 17 in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY — Aurora Navy League Council 247 will hold its monthly dinner meeting on Jan. 17. The meeting will be held in the private dining room at the rear (east side) of Grandma’s Table Restaurant, 1700 Douglas  Road in Montgomery, just north of Route 30.

A reception will begin at 5:15 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m. The dinner includes a choice of fish, chicken or beef entree, soup or salad, dinner rolls, vegetables, dessert and nonalcoholic drink. The cost is $17 all-inclusive; alcohol drinks can be purchased separately.

The after-dinner speaker will be Lt. Commander Steve Michaels, U.S. Navy, who will speak and present slides on “My Recent Year in Afghanistan.”

Michaels grew up on the southeast side of Chicago and attended Northwestern University and the Illinois Institute of Technology where he earned a graduate degree in engineering. His civilian employer is Northrop Grumman Corp. He is the commanding officer of NR SurgeMain Minneapolis. He returned from Operation Enduring Freedom, Kabul, Afghanistan, in September and he currently resides in Hoffman Estates with his wife, Carol.

The Aurora Council is having a membership drive, and will pay half of the first year’s dues for new members.

You do not need to be a member of the Navy League to attend the meeting; the public is welcome. The Navy League is a civilian organization started by President Teddy Roosevelt to provide civilian support to the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine and Sea Cadets.
