From the editor’s desk
As I write this editor’s column on Monday, I can’t get my morning drive into work out of my head. It had been a short weekend, and I knew I had a long week ahead of me. For some reason, I had a few extra minutes to spare on my way into Princeton (that seldom happens), so I decided to take the long way (the road less traveled, so to speak) into town. Wow! Was I ever glad I did!
Overnight, Jack Frost had visited Bureau County, and he had painted the most beautiful picture. The frost clung to everything, and I don’t mind telling you, it was absolutely beautiful. Though I knew it was going to be a hectic week, Jack had clearly outdone himself, and for some reason, all the tasks ahead of me didn’t look nearly so daunting ... Sometimes, we find comfort in the smallest things, if we just open ourselves to the possibilities.

It really is a BigDeal! Don’t forget to check out this week’s BigDeal! As a matter of fact, we have two BigDeals! running this week:
• At Johnson’s Carpet Shoppe in Princeton you can get a beautiful, banded area rug (5-1/2 feet by 7-1/2 feet) for only $99. There are four assorted colors from which to choose. The price is normally $199, so you save a whopping $100.
• Strike! Spare! Gutter ball? Whether you’re a great bowler, somewhere in between, or your ball usually ends up in the gutter (like mine), a hour of fun still awaits you at Ladd Lanes. Get one hour of bowling, which includes bowling shoes for only $10. That’s normally a $20 deal, which means you save $10.
To cash in on one of the BCR’s BigDeals! just go to our website at www.bcrnews.com and click on the “Illinois Valley BigDeal!” ad, or you can find it under the Quick Links on the home page of the website. If you’re interested, you’ll want to act now. Only a limited number of BigDeals! are available.

Seeing red? If you are, you no doubt have seen some of the new Bureau County Journal vending boxes in and around Bureau County. BCR District Manager Tom Long told me this morning he has placed brand new, bright red boxes filled with our Bureau County Journal in the following locations:
• Neponset Post Office.
• New Bedford Post Office.
• Dalzell Post Office.
• Bureau Post Office.
• The Ranch House, Bureau.
• Doc’s Drug, Henry.
• Granville Foods.
• Coal Miner’s Cafe, Mark.
There is no charge for the Bureau County Journal, so feel free to not only look for our new red boxes, but also you’ll want to grab a Journal and check out the news, sports and ads.

Customer Service Kudos: Do you know an individual or business who delivers great customer service? If so, send me an email at tsimon@bcrnews.com to let me know who gets your Kudos for the week. Following are the Kudos I received this week:
• Ray of Princeton said his Kudos go to BCR newspaper carrier Daniel Clark. “It’s fantastic. I never have to plod out to the street to look for my newspaper. It’s always between the doors, just where I want it.”
• The Gawenda Family of Streamwood said their Kudos go to Steve Kiser and the Princeton Trolley. “Our family enjoyed a wonderful ride on the trolley to enjoy all the holiday lights in Princeton. Thank you for such a special treat!”
• Marjorie said her Kudos are sent to Peg at ZBest Cafe in Sheffield. “This lady is something else. She was the only waitress when we were there for breakfast, and she had a lot of tables. She gave us great service and acted like we were the most important customers in the place.”
• Jim said, “My Kudos go to the Moose Lodge in Princeton. Nice people doing nice things for kids. I hope everyone patronizes them when they can.”

Coming up on Saturday: You’ll want to make sure you check out our upcoming Progress editions, set to be included in our next three Saturday editions — Jan. 14, Jan. 21 and Jan. 28. These annual editions are really something this year.
In the first two editions, we asked junior high students from six different schools to interview someone 50 years old or older. The students were to ask that person how things were different, how they had changed since they were a junior high student — for better and for worse. Wow! Wait until you read these two editions. They are spectacular! The students did a fantastic job, not only with their interviews but also with their writing. Some of the responses we received really are thought-provoking, as well as endearing.
In the third edition, the BCR asked high school and college students to talk about the progress they’ve seen in their lifetimes and what they expect to see in the future. I think you’ll also enjoy their responses.
While you’re reading the students’ responses, don’t forget to check out the advertisers in these three editions.

Looks like we’ve got another beautiful week ahead of us ... enjoy! I saw snow in next week’s forecast; it’s not over yet, my friends. Regardless of what it’s doing outside, though, find sometime to pamper yourself a bit; get reacquainted with an old friend; take time to pet the dog/cat; and tell your family how much you love them. Life is short. Do it now. And remember ... you are important to me and the BCR.
