Re: Hall Township’s “ordinance” regarding the spreading of sludge on nearby farm land.

I was amazed to read in the Jan. 14 edition of the BCR that Hall Township had drafted an ordinance in an attempt to stop Stewart Spreading from applying human waste sludge to farm land near Ladd.

What’s next? An ordinance to halt livestock waste from being applied to farmland? This is Bureau County, folks, not L.A. County! Bureau County is an agricultural county, and Stewart Spreading should have a right to apply any kind of sludge, whether it be human or livestock sludge, to farmland as a means of fertilizer.

Not only do I encourage Stewart Spreading to challenge this ridiculous ordinance, I hope for the sake of everyone who has any ties to agriculture whatsoever, that Stewart Spreading wins in court. Shame on Hall Township. I hope the BCR will keep us posted to any new developments on this issue, as it looks like those of us who care about production agriculture may very well have to make our voices heard.
