Tieman moves up at Hall
SPRING VALLEY — Randy Tieman directed the 2011 Hall Red Demon sophomore football team to an undefeated 9-0 season last fall and a combined 17-1 record over the past two years. He's now going to get a chance to carry that success over to the Red Devil varsity program.
Tieman was named as the new varsity head coach at a special meeting of the Hall Board of Education Wednesday night. He succeeds Jason Bland, who was not rehired following a 1-8 record in his third and final season.
In a press release submitted to the BCR, Superintendent Mike Struna said Hall "is excited about starting a new chapter in the great tradition that is Red Devil football. Coach Tieman will start his duties immediately as the Red Devils prepare for their first season in the Big Rivers Conference."
Tieman, who has been on the Hall football staff for two seasons and works as a teacher's aide, knows all about Red Devil tradition. He grew up around the program and played for the Red Devils, graduating in 1980. He has been who been actively involved in youth football and baseball in Spring Valley for several years
"It's a great opportunity. I'm very excited," said Tieman. "I've been around (Hall football) all my life. My dad brought me to Hall football when I was about six years old."
The new Hall head coach knows Red Devil fans have come to expect much success on the gridiron and said it his goal, "to get us back to where we were in the late 1990s and early 2000s," a time when Hall captured two state titles and had a state runner-up finish under former coach Gary Vicini.
To those Red Devil fans, he says however, "Have patience, and we'll get there. We have a good group coming, we've got a good core coming back. I'm really excited about next season."
Jack Boroski, a member of the Hall school board athletic committee who interviewed the five candidates for the job, said the kind of success Tieman had at the sophomore level always helps when it comes to hiring a new coach, but noted Tieman's ability to get the best out of the kids was a most attractive feature.
"Randy's has been very successful at the lower levels and youth football and he just has a good knack with the kids. He's been successful in baseball and a number of other areas. The board just felt that was our major deciding factor there," said Boroski, who at one time coached the two Spring Valley youth football teams with Tieman. "He's got a good rapport with he kids. He's disciplined, makes them do the right things. We just don't have many things, so we want to give him a chance at it.
"Randy's got a lot of ideas, he's got a lot of energy. He's not a yeller and a screamer. ... Some guys just have a certain knack and he's been pretty successful. He expects respect from them. The parents really like him. They appreciate his discipline."
Boroski said it was a tough decision for the board, because "we had a lot of good candidates. It just came down we felt this was the best way."
Tieman was one of four in-house candidates for the position. Longtime varsity assistants Mike Filippini and Joe Furlan, along with first-year athletic director Eric Bryant, also applied for the job. Filippini, the head varsity basketball coach, also sought the position when it was last opened when Bland was hired in 2009. Bryant previously was an assistant coach at Plano when the Reapers won the state championship.
Struna told the BCR a fifth candidate from outside the Hall staff also interviewed for the job.
Hall was approved for membership in the Big Rivers this fall having played one season in the West Central following the dissolvement of the NCIC.
Tieman said the Hall coaches have already got the weightroom going in preparation for the next season and plans to meet with his staff right away and the players early next week.

RD 89;what good is loyalty? you have to know football.I bet mr. vicini's hire had nothing to do with loyalty.Bad coaching, i agree with.bad talent doesn't exist with good coaching.SV Resident sounds very level headed, but his quote, "The red devil football program has been a disgrace for quite a few years now", is utterly ridiculous. The last 3 years were 8-19.bad coaching.07 and 08 was 11-7. not great, but in the playoffs. From 1987 to 2008, hall was in the playoffs 20 of 22 years. in these 20 playoff years, hall was 150-30, not counting post season.your quote is squashed by a 22 year blitz. |
