IVSO announces winners of 2012 Young Performers Competition

LASALLE — The Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra has announced the winners in the 2012 Young Performers Competition.
The competition is held annually. Winners were selected by audition in January and will solo with the orchestra at the upcoming orchestra concert at 3 p.m. March 11 in the Ottawa High School auditorium. Admission to the concert is by season membership or individual ticket. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for students (K-college with ID). Tickets may be purchased at the door or on the IVSO website, www.ivso.org.
The junior division winner was Danielle Jameson, 13, of Earlville. She is the daughter of Steve and Melissa Jameson of Earlville. She has studied flute with Sue Gillio for six and one-half years and participates in the Illinois Valley Flute Ensemble at Opus 111 Music Studio in LaSalle. She is a homeschooled eighth grader who also enjoys playing the piano and a variety of sports.
The senior division winners were Mora Novey and Jocelyn Schueler, flute duo.
Mora is the daughter of Tom and Anne Novey and has played the flute for six years and has studied privately under the direction of Cynthia Isenhower for two years. Currently a junior, she is a member of the Somonauk High School band and the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra. She participated in the IMEA District 8 Festival her freshman and sophomore years, placing as the principal flautist in the band her sophomore years. She aspires to study flute performance in college.
Jocelyn, a junior at Ottawa Township High School, is the daughter of Crystal Johnson and Scott Schueler. She has been playing the flute for seven years and has studied privately with Cynthia Isenhower for the last three years. She has been a member of the Ottawa Wind Ensemble for two years and is currently the principal flute. She has also earned a position in the IMEA District 2 band for the last two years. She is the principal flute for the The Flute Studio’s Senior Ensemble. She plans to major in music therapy and continue her flute studies in college.
The junior division first runner-up was Bethany Wohrley, flute, of Mendota. Honorable mentions went to Rachel Haas, flute, of LaSalle and Abigail Walker, piano, of Ottawa.
The senior division first runner-up was Hannah Bressner, flute, of Streator. Honorable mentions went to Marisa Mitchell, piano, of Peru and Jeremy Stevens, trumpet, of Peru.
Solo winners will also play at two educational concerts on March 2 at Ottawa and Streator high schools. These concerts are mainly for third, fourth and fifth grades. Students from surrounding schools are bussed into the high schools for the concerts. The educational school concerts are sponsored by Miller Group Charitable Trust and Illinois Valley Fine Arts Trust.
First runner-up winners, Bethany Wohrley and Hannah Bressner, and honorable mention winners Rachel Haas, Abigail Walker and Marisa Mitchell acknowledged but will be unable to perform due to college visit obligations. Emily Passini and Jeremy Stevens will perform at the IVSO Honors Recital at the Hegeler Carus Mansion from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 17. Anne Badger will accompany all the performers. Seating is limited. The Hegeler Carus Mansion is handicapped accessible.
