PRINCETON — Last week, St. Bede scored the first 31 points of the game against the Princeton Tigresses. That didn’t happen again but the Lady Bruins won comfortably again with a 53-38 victory over the Tigresses.
It was the Lady Bruins' third win of the season over PHS.
“I didn’t think we carried anything over from when the last time we played them,” said St. Bede head coach Tom McGunnigal.
Throughout the whole game, every time Princeton would score St. Bede would come right back and score. St. Bede junior forward Whitley Funfsinn had 11 points in the fourth quarter, all of them coming right after a Princeton basket. Princeton played well in the fourth quarter, cutting St. Bede’s lead to 13 midway through the quarter but could never get the lead to under ten.
“We played well in the second half. St. Bede is a very good team. We showed a much better effort than last time we played them,” said Princeton head Coach Matt Huber.
Princeton senior forward Kaitlyn Gorman scored seven of her team-high 12 points in the fourth quarter.
“She did well defensively, too,” said Huber. “It’s great to see her get better on the tail end of the season.”
St. Bede (26-5) started out strong, scoring the first 11 points. They took a 20-8 lead going into the second quarter of play. The second quarter only had eleven total points scored, eight of them by the Lady Bruins. At halftime, the Lady Bruins led 29-12.
St. Bede’s leading scorers were Whitley Funfsinn (13), Carolann Barnes (10), Morgan Dean (9) and Carly Ficek (8),
Princeton (14-14) was led in scoring by seniors Gorman (12), C.J. Rhodes (10), and Jasmine Kunkel (8). Gorman also had six rebounds while Rhodes had five steals, four rebounds, and two blocks.
Princeton hosts a 2A regional beginning Monday. Princeton plays Mendota starting at 6 p.m. St. Bede got the No. 1 overall seed to get a first-round bye, playing the winner of Princeton and Mendota on Tuesday.
St. Bede won the sophomore game 68-35.
