STERLING — Tim Wilson made sure Sterling Newman didn’t have to endure a few harrowing moments at the buzzer in its second meeting against Bureau Valley.
The 6-foot-4 senior forward scored a season-high 27 points, to go along with 10 rebounds and four steals, to lead the Comets to a 62-43 victory over the Storm on Friday in Sterling.
It was a far cry from the first time the teams met. Newman (14-10, 10-2 Three Rivers) didn’t secure a 58-57 victory in Manlius until BV’s Parker Neuhalfen missed at the buzzer back on Jan. 3.
The second meeting lacked that suspense.
“Wilson beat us to every loose ball, every offensive rebound — we just did not play with any kind of urgency whatsoever,” Bureau Valley coach Eric Lawson said. “We didn’t match what Newman, especially Wilson, brought to the table.”
The Comets led by just six points (25-19) at halftime, despite holding the Storm without a field goal in the second quarter. That prompted a plea from head coach Ray Sharp, and Wilson answered the call.
“I just said at halftime if we play harder, get the 50-50 balls and finish our layups, we’ll win,” Sharp said. “We came right out the third quarter, went on a 9-2 run and really separated.”
Wilson was good in the first half with 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting, then didn’t miss a shot in the second half, going 5-for-5 from both the field and the free-throw line. He ended up going 10-for-13 overall, and cashed in on all seven three-throw attempts.
“Coach told us we needed someone to step it up,” Wilson said, “so I felt it was my time to shine.”
The Comets led by as many as 18 points (40-22) after a basket from Jeremy Wilson with 3 minutes, 45 seconds left in the third quarter before the Storm (11-12, 6-4) fought back a bit. They went on a 9-0 run to get within nine points, but that was as close as they’d get the rest of the way.
Newman’s 1-3-1 zone defense caused the Storm to shoot an anemic 13-for-39 from the field, with 24 turnovers.
“It’s an easy zone to break if you move the basketball and you’re aggressive,” Lawson said. “We were very passive. We’d catch the ball and put it above our head. We’d wait to get trapped. All the things we preach not to do, that’s what we did.”
Sharp was particularly pleased his defense bottled up Neuhalfen, who scored 16 points in the teams’ first meeting, but had just two in the rematch on 1-for-7 shooting.
“We know that they struggle if he doesn’t score,” Sharp said. “As long as we could take him away and make some other kids try to score, they’re not as good a scorers as he is.”
“The 1-3-1’s obviously our best defense,” Tim Wilson said. “We’ve almost perfected it.”
Kyle Moore backed Wilson with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Bryce Walters had an effective game for BV with 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting. He also grabbed eight rebounds. Frank Gebeck added seven points.
