Newark spoils Senior Night for Farmer, Lions
LAMOILLE – LaMoille senior Jordan Farmer sank 15 points on 5-12 3-point attempts for the LaMoille/Ohio Lions Friday night on LaMoille/Ohio’s Senior Night, but the Newark Norsemen closed out the Lions’ home slate by posting a 56-31 Little Ten Conference varsity road victory.
Newark sank 10-21 shots from the field in rolling to a 24-0 shutout of LaMoille/Ohio after eight minutes of play. Meanwhile, the Lions shot 0-6 from the floor and committed a dozen first quarter turnovers during the Norsemen’s opening offensive onslaught.
“They just jumped on us. And it wasn’t anything that we weren’t doing,” said L/O coach Brent Kalsto. “It’s just them making shots and getting some turnovers. That’s what happens.
“It’s hard, when it snowballs like that. It just keeps coming at you and you can’t do anything about it. I mean, that’s tough. I feel for the kids. Tough season, but we’ll keep playing.”
Newark led 30-0 before LaMoille sophomore Brandon Morris got the Lions on the board with a layup at the 4:22 mark of the game’s second period.
Garrett Geuther’s basket in the closing seconds of the second quarter made it a 39-7 Newark lead at the half. Newark led by as many as 38 points, 45-7, early in the third quarter.
The Lions claimed 24 of the game’s final 35 points— including a trio of treys by Farmer — to solidify a 25-point Newark win.
“He’s probably our purest 3-point shooter. When we get open looks,” Kalsto said of Farmer’s long-range prowess. “But, you know, a lot of times I think we settle on looking for threes when we should be trying to drive to the hole. But it is what it is.”
Indeed, the Lions went 6-19 from regular range and a very similar 6-17 from three-point land on the night.
Geuther grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for L/O (2-24, 1-7).
Newark posted a trio of double-digit scorers, led by junior guard Joe Hughes who connected on four first quarter threes en route to a team-best 14 points. Hughes was followed by Adam Shorkey (13) and Brett Andersyn (10) in the scorebook.
Newark (14-11, 6-1) edged L/O in rebounding, 32-29. The Lions suffered from 34 turnovers, compared to the Norsemen's 12.
Newark claimed the frosh-soph contest as well, 42-37. A last-second three-pointer by Anthony Lovgren made the final tally a little closer in a game that L/O kept tight all night, but last led, 15-14, on a Jeffry DeLong free throw with 1:39 left in the first half.
