Bravettes take HBR’s best shot

The Annawan Bravettes continued its postseason march, dispatching former two-time 1A state champ Hinckley-Big Rock 53-32 in Tuesday’s 1A sectional finals at Varna.

No. 1 ranked in the AP 1A Poll, the Bravettes (29-1) will meet Lincoln Trail Conference rival Kewanee Wethersfield in Thursday’s finals. Annawan has fallen to LTC opponents AlWood and Stark County in each of the past two sectional tournaments.

“We can handle everyone’s best shot,” AHS senior Jordan Jackson told the Moline Dispatch. “We have to come out and play our game. Any team can get us on any given night if we don’t come out and play. If we play our best, our best can beat anyone else’s best.”

Sophomore center Celina VanHyfte led Annawan with 21 points and eight rebounds. Jackson had nine points and eight rebounds.

Prophetstown 45, East Dubuque 28: The Lady Prophets scored the final 16 points of Tuesday’s semifinals at Lanark. Riley Walters led the Lady Prophets with 22 points. Prophetstown (22-9), the Three Rivers Conference co-champion, will seek its first sectional crown since 2003 when they square off against Freeport Aquin at 7:30 p.m.
