LAMOILLE — With only five returning players, LaMoille/Ohio softball coach Fred Bell said his Lady Lions are in a building mode. But he likes the building blocks he has in place.

That building project starts with the Lady Lions returners — senior Erika Walzer (catcher) and juniors Mary Pinter (OF), Brittany Chasteen (1B/P) and Ashley Schrader (CF). They will serve as team captains. Sophomore infielder Alexis Beard is also back in the fold.

Bell is most pleased to bring in four girls from Ohio and all four will start he said — senior Tori DeWaele (SS/P), junior Sammy O’Brien (OF), sophomore Vanessa Martinez (LF/1B)and freshman Kaitlyn Hughes (3B).

“With the Ohio connection, our outlook is for an improvement in our softball program in the future,” Bell said.

Freshman Ragen Forbes will take over most of the pitching duties from graduated senior Brooke Schumacher with Chasteen and DeWaele also pitching in as needed. Other notable newcomers are juniors Amber Dannis (IF) and Stefanie Ridge (OF) and sophomore Myrah Graham (IF).

“We expect to have good defense and better hitting than last year,” Bell said.

The Lady Lions’ roster is 19 strong, including freshmen Emily Fahs, Toni Lawrence, Laura Pinter, Kelsi Potochney, Amanda Chasteen and Paige Koskosky and sophomore Vanessa Martinez.

“We have a bunch of freshman who are really helping out. That’s really great to have that many young kids. Shows there’s a future,” he said.

LaMoille baseball

Coach Chuck Lovgren has 11 players to field his Lions 9 this spring on the baseball diamond. There are just five upperclassmen in the mix, including seniors Jordan Farmer, Jeremiah Graham, Nick Zimmerlein and junior Wesley Rogers. Rounding out the team are sophomores Anthony Lovgren, Preston Powers, Julian Gonzalez and freshmen Jake Lucas, Jacob Riley and Tracer Mills.

LaMoille track

There are nine LaMoille athletes running in the track co-op with Amboy, including senior Avery Barrett, junior Meredith Stamberger, sophomores Shiela Browning, David Dickey, Ben Hosto, Laura Rieker and freshmen Luke Becker, Jeffry DeLong and Monica Joerger.
