Former Bureau County prep athletes are getting their swings in at the collegiate level this spring. We've touched on baseball and softball previously; here's a look at area tennis players and golfers.

Tennis

Six former Princeton High School players and three St. Bede products are suiting up for the IVCC tennis team this spring.

PHS products on the men's side are freshman Eric Bickett, Scott Blessman and Reynard Tirao, who team up again with sophomore Chadwick Hermeyer of Princeton. Sophomore Michaela Nelson and freshman Shelby Wagner swing for the IVCC women.

Sophomores Jani Hurst, Claire Kunkel and Travis Kaszynski from St. Bede round out the local IVCC contingent.

The IVCC squads host a "Servathon" and Mixed Doubles Tournament. The Eagles opened the season this week and travel to Rockford to face host Rock Valley and Lake Country on Saturday. IVCC plays its home matches at Hegeler Park in LaSalle.

Golf

Former BCR Golfer of the Year Collin Slattery is a freshman member of the Illinois Central College golf team in East Peoria. He is in the Cougars top four and barring any surprises, coach Bo Ryan said he will compete in every tournament this spring. Ryan said Slattery works hard, but sometimes he is too hard on himself.

He shot a three-round tally of 239 for the Cougars on March 15-17 in the 11th annual Spring Fling in Scottsboro, Ala. Ryan said Slattery is "hitting the ball fine, but just not scoring." Next on the tees for ICC are the MWAC Championships at Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin on April 8.

• Princeton's Gwen Holmes is competing in her junior season for Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, She will make a trip a little closer to home this weekend playing in the St. Francis University Spring Tournament in Joliet.
