Iron Chefs in the making at Bureau Valley High School

Bureau Valley High School students Alexis Maloney (left) and Devan Thompson (center) get some assistance from Chef Jerry Herbick during Tuesday’s “Iron Chef Bureau Valley” cooking competition at the school. Two teams participated in the competition, with the boys team of Paul Donovan, Michael Trujillo and Jeremy Allison beating the girls team, which also included Kaitlyn Moreland, by a 127 to 120 score. The boys won with their southwest chicken and pasta dish. Working with the boys team was Chef Eran Salzmann of ZBest Restaurant in Sheffield. Judges for the cook-off were BVHS students Danny Hartz and Kate DeBrock, BV Food Service Director Jena Atkinson and BV South food site manager Ruth Ann Barker. The competition was recommended by consultant Chef Greg Christian, who works with the Bureau Valley District to develop healthier menu choices for the students, and organized by BVHS Family Consumer Science teacher DeAnna Coers. Also taking part in Tuasday’s taste testing were BVHS Superintendent John Bute and BV Board President Keith Bolin.
