Following high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1966. He graduated from Bradley University in Peoria and received a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.

Following graduation, Tim was employed in the corrugated container industry as a salesman. In 1980 he acquired Illinois Valley Container Corp. in Peru. In 1990 he also acquired Heritage Packaging Corp. in Lincoln, Ill.

Tim is survived by his wife of 45 years, Julia Shipp Alter of Princeton, Ill., and Lighthouse Point, Fla.; his daughter, Virginia Krieg and her husband Allen of Brunswick, Ga.; his son Jay and his wife Jennifer of Princeton; five grandchildren, James, Conner, Caleb, Olivia and Nicholas; and one sister, Susan Alter Smith of Delray Beach, Fla., and Sheperdstown, W.Va.
