Ferris Invite on tap Monday at PHS
The Princeton Invitational track meet dates back to 1953, with the addition of the girls portion in 1990. The meet was renamed as the Ferris Family Invitational after the donation from the Ferris Family toward the new all-weather project in 1999.
Four records for the PHS invitational which runs Monday at Rathje Track have stood the test of time for 40 years or more. See records below.
Hall’s Kent Kasik stil holds the record in the weightmen’s 100 from 1969 when he clocked at 11.6 time converted from yards.
Princeton’s Jim Howard still holds the shot put record of 56-5 1/2 he set in 1970. He was the last in a line of brothers to hold the record.
The next year, Tigers Kent Purvis and Geno Storm set distance records that still stand today. Purvis ran a one-mile time that coverts to 4:25.2 for 1600 meters. Storm clocked a two mile time of 9:34.8 that has been equaled by Rock Falls Larry Schultz (9:26.5) in 1977.
PHS’ own Pat Hodge, who has coached girls track for years at his alma mater, set the meet record in the 800 meters at 1:58.2 in 1976. It was matched, but not bested, by Rock Falls’ Johnathan Martin in 2003.
The pole vault record has been held by PHS’ Rick Lappin since 1981 when he cleared 14-6 3/4. PHS senior James Dove went 14-7 this season to break Lappin's county record, but has to rejump it to set a PIT record.
The oldest record for the girls is held by Hall’s Carla Muntz with a time of 13.87 in the throwers’ 100 dash in 1997.
Records in the remaining 19 events all have been recorded since the turn of the century. PHS’ Amber Ruter eclipsed the previous mark in the shot put of 35-9 3/4 set in 1997 with a toss of 38-0 1/4 last year.
PHS’ Rebekah Faber holds the most meet records with three in 2003. She ran a 2:23.7 in the 800, a 5:12.2 in the 1600 and a 11:39.9 in the 3200.
The other multiple record holder for the girls is PHS’ Ashly Lowdermilk, who ran a 12.5 in the 100 in 2004 and 2005 and a 25.0 in the 200 in 2003. She shares the 100 record with Rock Falls’ Angela Rogde (2002).
PHS senior Laura Fredenhagen broke the pole vault record a year ago at 10-6. She is out for the season this year with a knee injury.
