Bureau Valley senior Natalie Swanson signs to compete in throws for the North Park University. She is joined by her parents, Pete and Konnie Swanson of Manlius; and (back row, from left) BV coaches Jeff Ohlson and Dale Donner.

MANLIUS — Bureau Valley senior Natalie Swanson will throw the weights for North Park University next year in Chicago.

It was not the Vikings’ track program that attracted her to North Park, rather its affiliation with the Covenant Church in Princeton in which she attends. She plans to study youth ministry at North Park.

Swanson knows it will be a pretty big adjustment heading from the open fields around Manlius to the city lights in Chicago

“The first time I visited, I said, ‘There’s no way I can do this.’ But you can stand in the middle of the campus and not feel like you’re in the city,” she said, noting the nearby “El” is just two blocks away that can get her downtown in a matter of minutes.

She said the North Park track program is under a rebuilding process under a new coach and she should become one of their top two throwers. North Park is a Division III program competing in the CCIW.

Swanson placed third in both weight events in last week’s Rollie Morris Invitational at Hall.

Swanson said it’s just a coincidence that North Park is the alma mater of BV weight coach Jeff Ohlson, who played football for the Vikings.

• Singing the Blues: Chase Robbins of Bloomington has indicated he plans to attend Millikin University and play basketball for the Big Blue and study Millikin’s Ex-ploratory Studies program.

The senior guard was a Big 12 Conference Honorable Mention selection.

He is the son of Tony and Dana Robbins. Tony Robbins was a PHS athlete.
