Party, open house

VAN ORIN — The Van Orin Gospel Church’s in-home party and crafts open house will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the church’s Fellowship Hall. There will be free cookies and drinks; sandwiches, chips and soda can be purchased. There will be gift bags for all adults who attend and there will be door prizes. Van Orin in on Route 92 between Ohio and LaMoille. The church is one block south of the highway.

Teen MOPS meeting

PRINCETON — Bureau County Teen Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 24 N. Main St., Princeton. Teen MOPS is for any mom (under 21) with a child from infancy to kindergarten who is looking for support from other moms. MOPS believes that no mom should be alone. Childcare is provided.

Special event

PERU — The First Congregational Church of Peru will host a free soup and sandwich meal from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Members of the community are invited. The church is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year with special events that will be announced in the coming months.

HENRY — Tickets for River Valley Players’ “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” are now available. Performances have been set for Oct. 21, 22, 27 and 28 at St. Mary’s Community Center in Henry. Tickets are $26.50 and includes a meal served prior to the performance (salad bar, dinner buffet, dessert and three drink choices). The meal on Saturdays is served at 6:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee meal is served at 12:30 p.m. For advance tickets, call 309-364-3403 or email

Names wanted

PRINCETON — The American Legion Woman’s Auxiliary of Princeton is once again seeking names and complete addresses of troops overseas serving in Iraq and Afghanistan so the Auxiliary Unit can send them a Christmas box. Names and addresses will be accepted through Oct. 31 by sending to VA&R chairperson Clara Pease, 321 Briar Lane, Princeton, IL 61356; or mail to American Legion Woman’s Auxiliary, 1549 W. Peru St., Princeton, IL 61356, Attn.: Overseas Troops.

Buddy Bags fundraiser

PRINCETON — A Buddy Bags buffet fundraiser will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 23 at Pizza Hut in Princeton. Tickets are $9 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. Buddy Bags is a program to provide food on the weekends to children whose primary source of nutrition is the free breakfast/lunch program at school. To purchase tickets in advance, call Sandy at 815-303-1983 or see a Buddy Bags representative. Buddy Bags representatives are also selling Casey’s Partnership cards for pizza and doughnuts during the month of September. The pizza card is $15 and allows for a free medium pizza with the purchase of a large specialty pizza. The doughnut card is $10 and allows six free cake doughnuts with the purchase of six doughnuts.
