PRINCETON — The Illinois Theatre Conservatory (ITC), the education committee of the Princeton Theatre Group (PTG), is pleased to announce its fall 2012 series of theatre classes in cooperation with Illinois Valley Community College. During the month of October, two courses will be held at the Grace Performing Arts Center, 316 S. Main St., in Princeton.
“Do It Yourself Shakespeare,” a three-session class taught by Dexter Brigham, executive artistic director of ITC’s famed affiliate, Festival 56, will be held beginning Oct. 1 and continue on Oct. 15 and 22. In this class, students will explore selected scenes and soliloquies from some of Shakespeare’s most important plays, taking parts such as Romeo, Juliet, Hamlet and Macbeth under the tutelage of a well-known and highly regarded local producer and director, whose repertoire includes the popular annual Princeton summer event, Shakespeare in the Park.
Students will consider their thoughts, feelings and reactions to the parts read by others, in an informal and relaxed series of readings, for which no previous experience is required. Plot summaries will be provided in advance, so there will be no need to plow through all five acts of anything in order to understand the context.
“Shakespeare’s plays are meant to be performed and not studied alone in a vacuum. He wrote for multiple audiences, so each reader’s understanding and enjoyment of his works is tempered by his or her own knowledge and experiences. We’ll share our thoughts as we read together and strive to be the best goldarn Hamlets that we can be,” says Dexter Brigham, who is looking forward to sharing his knowledge of the craft with a new cast of “actors.”
The second class, “Out of the Kitchen and Onto the Stage (Food as Theater),” will be held on Oct. 29. Co-instructors are ITC Committee member Marina Carrott and Chef Monika Sudakov.
After a career in banking, government and not-for-profit administration, Carrott was finally able to attend chef’s school. She is currently working as a consultant to a start-up café, which will be operated as a training facility for a Chicago social service agency.
Sudakov is the chef and, together with her husband, proprietor of the Chestnut Street Inn in Sheffield. She too has a varied background, having studied anthropology and worked in theatre. Recently Chef Monika was awarded the prestigious designation of Certified Culinary Professional, putting her in the company of one of her personal heroes, Julia Child.
The class will review, with a combination of clips and commentary, a modern-day phenomenon: how the back-of-the-house skill of cooking emerged from the kitchen to take center stage on television, at the movies, and ultimately, within live theatre. The co-instructors will share their knowledge and insights into the extraordinary evolution/revolution that has lead modern men and women to regard food preparation not as a task, but as entertainment. During the class, Chef Monika, who appears regularly on “Paula Sands Live!,” will demonstrate the preparation of a treat that will be shared with the students during the break.
