It looks like some cooler, fall-like weather is headed our way, and I have to tell you I absolutely love the crispness of the season. On the other side of that proverbial colored leaf, though, I have to also tell you I absolutely detest the idea of it getting dark earlier. I guess I can’t have my caramel apple and eat it too, so to speak.

I hope you like the photo on the front page today. I snapped it on my way to work very early Monday morning. I hate driving in the fog, but the way the low-lying fog enveloped us with the sun attempting to peek through was absolutely breathtaking. Autumn — which officially begins on Saturday — is notorious for foggy mornings, so please drive with caution ... and watch out for crazy newspaper editors who think they need to stop to take a photo alongside the road. Duh!

Illinois Valley Living: Our second edition of our new magazine — Illinois Valley Living — will be hitting the streets soon. If you liked our first edition, you are going to love the second one, which is again filled with the people, places and things that make the Illinois Valley a special place to live, work and play. You’ll see familiar names, places and faces inside the pages, and you’ll enjoy reading some great stories mixed with second-to-none photography. Our last magazine was 48 pages, however, this one gives you even more reading enjoyment with 72 pages. I know you’re going to love it!

Have you been enjoying our monthly featured, titled “Walking the Walk,” which features local clergy who answer a variety of questions and how those questions pertain to their faith? If you are a lay leader or clergy and would like to participate during the next quarter of 2012, give me a call at 815-875-4461, ext. 229.

Campaign signs are starting to pop up around the county. While each candidate has the right to want you to see his/her name a bazillion times before the election, I believe it’s our responsibility to get to know what each candidate stands for; how they feel on particular issues; and what we can expect from him/her if we elect them to office. I’ve already started to do my own homework. Now is the time.

Do you enjoy writing and taking photos? Do you enjoy the local sports scene? If those two sentences describe you, give BCR Sports Editor Kevin Hieronymus a call at 815-875-4461, ext. 231, or send him an email at khieronymus@bcrnews.com. We are looking for a couple of sports correspondents to cover local sporting events with stories and photos. We’d love to have you be a part of our team.

Thought for the day: “If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there’d be a shortage of fishing poles.” Doug Larson.

I was out at A Hundred Acres Orchard in Princeton during the weekend. What a fun place! Did I mention their Apple Crisp doughnuts? Oh my ...

With cooler weather headed our way, it won’t be long before we’ll be seeing the vibrant colors of fall. Enjoy. Breathe. Exhale. Relax. And remember ... you are important to me and the BCR.
