PRINCETON — The Bureau County Fairgrounds will host an Oktoberfest celebration Sept. 29 at the fairgrounds in Princeton. The event will include German food, beer and traditional German music.
Although Oktoberfest is celebrated between the end of September and the beginning of October in Munich, Germany, you can get a taste of the festivities right here in Princeton.
The fairgrounds is located at 811 W. Peru St. The event will be held in the exhibit halls at the fairgrounds. Admission is $5.
Schnitzel, German potato salad, red cabbage, sauerkraut, spaetzel with gravy, bratwurst, grilled pork chops and hot dogs will be served from 4 to 8 p.m. or until it runs out. Dessert will include black forest cake, German apple cake, German chocolate cake and strudel.
There will be four different kinds of beer served, including Beck’s Oktoberfest, Amber Bock and Belgian White beer. Three different kinds of wine, pop and coffee will also be served. An Oktoberfest celebration wouldn’t be complete without hot pretzels and mustard and sausages served right at the bar.
The music will begin at 4 p.m. with Terry Bredenberg of Pekin and his strolling accordion music, featuring traditional German folk songs and polkas. Die Musikmeisters Band will play from 7 to 11 p.m. This six-piece band has been performing in the Chicago, Wisconsin and Midwest areas for the past 10 years. Their repertoire combines a unique blend of traditional German music, including polkas, waltzes, marches, schottisches, folk songs and audience participation songs. The band also adds some American music to the mix. Die Musikmeisters’ diverse musical arrangements in combination with their liveliness and humor help provide Oktoberfest entertainment for all ages.
Kicking off the festivities will be a bags tournament at 2 p.m. in the exhibit hall at the fairgrounds. Registration is limited to 32 teams and will start at 2 p.m. with board assignments when the tourney begins. For pre-registration, call Nick Peach at 815-866-6011. The fee is $20 per team.
